San Juan cruise parking
San Juan's cruise port has no parking of its own. For the Old San Juan piers, the port points you to the public Covadonga garage across the street. The Pan American Piers have no confirmed parking, and Royal Caribbean says none is available there, so a taxi or rideshare is the simpler plan.
The garage doesn't publish a cruise rate. Call ahead for its cruiser price.

Getting there
Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU) is the airport. The port puts it about 7 miles away. A taxi or rideshare is the easy way in, and both pick up and drop off in marked areas outside the piers. Public buses run too, but the port says they're slow and not for luggage.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport SJU
San Juan's main airport, on the east side of the city. The Pan American Piers are the shorter ride.

What port does Royal Caribbean use in San Juan?
Royal Caribbean usually sails from the Pan American Piers in San Juan's Isla Grande district, and its own directions name Pan American Pier 2. Norwegian and Celebrity use the Pan American Piers too, and Virgin Voyages boards at Pier 4 in Old San Juan. Berths can change, so check the pier on your cruise documents. See both pier areas.
Are there two cruise ports in San Juan?
Yes. San Juan's cruises start from two areas: the Pan American Piers in Isla Grande, which the port built for homeport sailings, and Piers 3 and 4 in Old San Juan. The Pan American Piers are on Calle Muelle, across the bay from the old city. Piers 3 and 4 are on Paseo Concepción de Gracia, at the edge of Old San Juan. Your cruise documents say which one is yours.
What cruise lines sail from San Juan?
Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity and Virgin Voyages all run cruises from San Juan this winter. Most are 7-night round trips through the Southern and Eastern Caribbean. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity call at islands such as St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Antigua and St. Kitts, Norwegian adds Curaçao and Aruba, and Virgin goes as far as St. Lucia and Barbados. See where the ships go.
How far is Old San Juan from the cruise port?
It depends on your pier. Piers 3 and 4 sit right in Old San Juan: Plaza de Armas, the heart of the old city, is about 0.4 mi from Pier 3 and 0.5 mi from Pier 4. The Pan American Piers, where most San Juan cruises start, are across the bay from the old city, so plan on a taxi between them.
Is there anything to do near the San Juan cruise port?
Yes, if your ship leaves from Old San Juan. Piers 3 and 4 are about half a mile from Plaza de Armas, and the old city's two forts, El Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, are open every day from 9 am to 5 pm, the National Park Service says. The port itself lists duty free and shops. From the Pan American Piers, the old city is a taxi ride away.
Hotels
Which San Juan hotels have a shuttle to the cruise port?
We found no San Juan hotel that offers a shuttle to the cruise piers or a park-and-cruise package. What San Juan does have is hotels you can walk from: Hotel Rumbao, CasaBlanca, Hotel Milano and Alma are a short walk from Pier 4 in Old San Juan, and Hyatt House San Juan is within walking distance of the Pan American Piers. Compare them.
Which hotels can you walk to the San Juan cruise port from?
Several hotels are a short walk from San Juan's cruise piers. Hotel Rumbao is 0.28 mi from Pier 4, about 6 minutes on foot; CasaBlanca, Hotel Milano and Alma, in the old city, are about 10 minutes away. For the Pan American Piers, Hyatt House San Juan is 0.66 mi, about 14 minutes. See the hotels.
Parking
How much is parking at the San Juan cruise port?
San Juan Cruise Port has no parking of its own, so there's no port parking rate. The port points cruisers to the public Covadonga garage across from the Old San Juan piers. That garage doesn't publish a cruise price; it gives cruisers a special rate by phone, so call before you sail. See parking.
Where is the best place to park for a cruise in San Juan?
For a San Juan cruise, the port's own suggestion is the public Covadonga garage, across from the Old San Juan piers. The port runs no parking. Covadonga only suits Piers 3 and 4: for the Pan American Piers there's no confirmed parking, and Royal Caribbean says parking isn't available at its pier. Taxis and rideshares wait just outside the piers. See parking.
Getting there
How far is San Juan airport from the cruise port?

Taxis and rideshares are the easy way in. Public buses run but are slow and not meant for luggage, and the port also lists pre-arranged private transfers. Getting there.
How much is a taxi from San Juan airport to the cruise terminal?

Embarkation day
What time should I arrive at the San Juan cruise terminal?
Arrive at the San Juan cruise terminal at the boarding time your cruise line gives you; the port doesn't set its own. Inside, the terminal's information panels show your check-in and boarding gate. Every passenger and bag is screened, and friends can come as far as security. Drivers drop off in marked areas outside the piers.
Do I need a passport to cruise from San Juan?
No passport is needed just to reach San Juan from the U.S. mainland: Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so the port says entry works like any U.S. trip. For the cruise itself, a sailing that starts and ends in San Juan is a closed-loop cruise, which U.S. Customs and Border Protection lets U.S. citizens re-enter with a birth certificate plus photo ID. CBP warns the islands you visit may still ask for a passport.
What time zone is San Juan in?
San Juan is on Atlantic Standard Time (UTC−4) all year and doesn't use daylight saving time, the port says. Many ships keep their home port's time instead, and itineraries and all-aboard times are given in ship time, so check which clock your ship uses.
