Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Grand Turk? Is it a tender port?

Cruise ships dock at the Grand Turk Cruise Center pier on the island's southwestern tip, so there's no tender: you walk off the ship into the complex a couple of hundred feet away. It's the only cruise pier, so Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC and Virgin Voyages all usually tie up there. Carnival opened the center in 2006. Cockburn Town, the capital, is about 2.5 miles north.

What is there to do at the Grand Turk cruise port?

Quite a lot without leaving the gate: the Grand Turk Cruise Center has a big free-form pool, a beach beside the pier, a large Margaritaville with a swim-up bar, the FlowRider surf machine, duty-free shops and a small NASA exhibit. The pool, the beach and most loungers cost nothing; cabanas and the loungers nearest the water are extra. For a quieter beach, Governor's Beach is about a mile north, a 20-minute walk or a $4 taxi.

Is the pool at the Grand Turk cruise port free?

Yes, the big pool at the Grand Turk Cruise Center, beside Margaritaville, is free for cruise passengers, and so are the loungers around it. What costs extra: private cabanas, which you book through your cruise line, and some of the beach loungers closest to the water. Margaritaville itself only opens on days when a ship is in.

Can I walk from the Grand Turk cruise port to Cockburn Town?

Not easily: Cockburn Town is about 2.5 miles north of the Grand Turk Cruise Center, on roads with little shade and few sidewalks. Most people take a taxi, which takes 10 to 12 minutes and costs about $5 a person each way. Taxis have no meters, so agree the fare before you get in. Grand Turk has no public buses; a golf cart or scooter rental is the other usual way.

Beaches & water

Is there a beach near the Grand Turk cruise port?

Yes: the Grand Turk Cruise Center has its own beach right beside the pier, about a two-minute walk from the ship, with free loungers and a hut renting snorkel gear. It gets crowded on ship days, and a quieter, rockier stretch is a few minutes south of the pier. Governor's Beach, shaded by casuarina trees, is about 0.9 miles north: a 20-minute walk on a road without sidewalks, because the shore route is blocked.

Can you snorkel in Grand Turk without an excursion?

Yes, you can snorkel straight off the Grand Turk Cruise Center beach, and a hut on the beach rents snorkel gear and floats. Governor's Beach, about a mile north, has only a little coral around an old rock jetty. For more to look at, the clear kayak trip in the 4-hour plans paddles over an old crane wreck and stops at a sandbar to dive for conch.

Can you swim with stingrays in Grand Turk?

Yes, at Gibbs Cay, an uninhabited islet about 2.4 miles east of the cruise center, where guided snorkel trips let you hand-feed southern stingrays in the shallows, according to Celebrity Cruises. It's a boat trip, so you need a guided tour. None of the four booking sites we use listed one on October 19, 2026, which is why it isn't in the plans above.

Getting around

How much is a taxi from the Grand Turk cruise port?

Taxis from the Grand Turk Cruise Center charge per person, one way, by distance: about $4 to Governor's Beach, $5 to Cockburn Town and $9 to the lighthouse at the north end. They wait right outside the complex, have no meters and mostly take cash in US dollars, so confirm the fare before you get in and carry small bills.

How much does it cost to rent a golf cart at the Grand Turk cruise port?

On October 19, 2026, the top-ranked golf cart rental for Grand Turk on GetYourGuide started at $93.50 per cart for up to two people for the day, with fuel and a map included, picked up just outside the cruise center gate. The island is only about six miles long, so a day covers it. Traffic keeps left, and goats, donkeys and horses often wander onto the road.

What is a must-see in Grand Turk?

Grand Turk's best-known sights are spread along its six miles: Governor's Beach about a mile north of the pier, the Turks and Caicos National Museum and the old prison on Front Street in Cockburn Town, the 1850s lighthouse on a bluff at the north tip, and the stingrays at Gibbs Cay offshore. On land, the farthest of them, the lighthouse, is about a $9 taxi ride, or take a golf cart for the day (7-hour plan).

Money, time & documents

Do they use US dollars in Grand Turk?

Yes, the US dollar is the official currency of the Turks and Caicos Islands, so there's nothing to exchange. Celebrity Cruises notes that most places take credit cards but beach vendors and small stalls may not, and most taxi drivers want cash, so bring small bills ashore.

Is Grand Turk on the same time as the ship?

Usually yes: the Turks and Caicos Government keeps the islands on US Eastern time, daylight saving included, so Grand Turk matches a ship running on Eastern time all year. Check the ship's daily planner in case it keeps a different clock. Royal Caribbean, like other lines, says the ship won't wait for guests who are late back on their own.

Do you need a passport for a Grand Turk cruise?

Not always: US Customs and Border Protection lets US citizens on a closed-loop cruise, one that starts and ends at the same US port, re-enter with a birth certificate and government photo ID, though it warns the countries you visit may still ask for a passport. If you miss the ship and have to fly home from Grand Turk, you'll need a passport for the flight. The UK Foreign Office says visitors need no visa.

Safety & staying connected

Is it safe to travel to Grand Turk right now?

The US State Department rates the Turks and Caicos Islands Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, because of crime, and says most of it happens on Providenciales and is mainly opportunistic theft like purse snatching. The UK Foreign Office adds that Grand Turk has also seen more serious crime than the other islands. Keep an eye on your bag, agree taxi fares first, and never carry ammunition, even one bullet: it's illegal and has led to arrests.

Is there Wi-Fi at the Grand Turk cruise port?

There's no free Wi-Fi across the Grand Turk Cruise Center, but some of the bars and restaurants inside it give free Wi-Fi to customers. Expect it to be slow when ships are in port, so don't count on it for video calls or big downloads.
