Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Do cruise ships dock or tender in Belize City?

Cruise ships don't dock in Belize City: the water is too shallow, so ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the Fort Street Tourism Village. Celebrity puts the tender ride at about 20 minutes. It's the only landing, so Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity and MSC passengers all come ashore at the same place, an open-air village of shops, bars and restaurants at the edge of downtown.

Does Norwegian Cruise Line stop in Belize City?

Usually not: Norwegian Cruise Line ships in Belize normally call at Harvest Caye, Norwegian's own docking port in southern Belize, not at Belize City. The Belize Tourism Board says Harvest Caye caters only to Norwegian passengers. Ships that do come to Belize City, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity and MSC, anchor offshore and tender to the Fort Street Tourism Village.

How long is the tender ride in Belize City, and do I need a tender ticket?

The tender from your ship to Belize City takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and early in the day you may need a tender ticket. Passengers on the ship's own excursions board first, as Celebrity explains for tender ports; everyone else collects numbered tickets and waits to be called, though later in the morning tickets often stop being needed. Your ship announces its last tender back, so plan around that, not all-aboard. Independent tour guides usually wait at the street-side exit of Terminal One.

Is there anything to do at the Belize City cruise port?

Yes: the Fort Street Tourism Village where tenders land has shops, duty-free stores, bars, restaurants and a Belize Tourism Board information desk, so there's something to do without leaving the gates. Outside, the BELIZE sign and Baron Bliss Lighthouse are a few minutes' walk and free to see, and the Swing Bridge and the Museum of Belize, on the old jail site, are about 10 minutes away. There's no beach within a walk.

Can I walk from the Belize City cruise port to town?

Yes. Downtown Belize City starts at the Tourism Village gates, and the Swing Bridge over Haulover Creek, in the middle of downtown, is about 0.4 miles (around 10 minutes) on foot via Fort Street and North Front Street. The BELIZE sign and the lighthouse are on the way. The US State Department singles out the south side of the city, across the bridge, for crime, so our walking map stays on the north side. See the walking map.

Beaches & water

Is there a beach near the cruise port in Belize City?

No, there's no swimming beach within walking distance of the Belize City cruise port; the nearest beaches are on the offshore cayes. Caye Caulker is about 45 minutes away by water taxi, and the Belize Tourism Board lists Goff's Caye, a small sandy island near the city, and Starfish Island among the cruise excursions for a beach and snorkel day.

Can I go snorkeling from the Belize City cruise port?

Not from the pier: you need a boat to reach the reef from Belize City, and we found no independent snorkel tour from the cruise port on our booking partners. The Belize Tourism Board lists reef trips among cruise excursions, including Goff's Caye and snorkeling at Shark Ray Alley, so check your ship's tours. Otherwise, take the 45-minute water taxi to Caye Caulker, where a 3-hour marine reserve snorkel tour starts a short walk from the ferry.

Can I take the water taxi to Caye Caulker on a cruise day?

Yes, but only with time to spare: Caye Caulker is about 45 minutes from Belize City by water taxi each way, on top of a 15 to 30 minute tender at each end. San Pedro Belize Express runs from the Belize Marine Terminal on North Front Street. Work back from your ship's last tender, not all-aboard, because the ship won't wait for passengers on their own plans.

Tours & timing

How far are Altun Ha and cave tubing from the Belize cruise port?

Altun Ha's Maya temples are about 30 miles north of Belize City, and the cave-tubing caves are about an hour's drive inland; Royal Caribbean puts Altun Ha and the Belize Zoo about 30 to 40 minutes from the Tourism Village. Ships usually stay from 7 or 8 am to 4 to 6 pm, and several cave tours are timed to leave an hour after your ship arrives and return an hour before it sails. Compare the 6-hour plans.

What time is it in Belize compared with ship time?

Belize is on Central Standard Time all year, with no daylight saving, so it often won't match your ship. A ship on Florida time is 2 hours ahead of Belize from March to early November and 1 hour ahead in winter; a ship on Texas time is 1 hour ahead in summer and the same in winter. All-aboard is always in ship time, and some tour operators book cruise pickups by ship time too, so confirm which clock you're on.

Money & getting around

How do taxis work at the Belize City cruise port?

Licensed taxis in Belize City have green license plates, and they aren't metered, so agree the fare with the driver before you get in. That matters most for longer rides, such as Altun Ha about 30 miles north. The Belize Tourism Board says licensed tour guides and operators must carry a licence and photo ID, so it's fair to ask to see one.

Do I need Belize dollars, or can I use US dollars?

You don't need Belize dollars: US dollars are widely accepted in Belize City, as Celebrity and Royal Caribbean both note. The Belize dollar is fixed at two to one US dollar, so prices in BZ$ are easy to convert, but change may come back in Belize dollars. There are ATMs in the Tourism Village if you need cash.

Is there Wi-Fi at the Belize City cruise port?

Some restaurants and bars in Belize City's Fort Street Tourism Village offer free Wi-Fi, but it's reported as patchy, so don't count on it for anything important. On land your phone roams on local networks under your plan's international terms, while the ship's own cellular network is billed separately as cruise roaming.

Safety & documents

Is Belize City safe for cruise passengers?

The US State Department rates Belize Level 2, 'exercise increased caution', because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the most violent crime. The Tourism Village sits on the Fort George side, north of Haulover Creek; the Swing Bridge, about 0.4 miles from the landing, is where you'd cross. Belize has uniformed tourism police, and the Belize Tourism Board suggests going ashore in groups with your travel documents.

Do you need a passport for a Belize cruise?

US citizens on a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends at the same US port can re-enter the US with a birth certificate and government photo ID, according to US Customs and Border Protection. A passport is still the safer choice: if you miss the ship in Belize and have to fly home, you'll need a passport book. The Belize Tourism Board asks passengers to carry their travel documents and ship card ashore.
