Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in La Coruña?

Cruise ships in La Coruña (A Coruña) dock alongside at the Muelle de Trasatlánticos, the port's dedicated cruise quay in the city centre, with a terminal building for passenger checks and a shop. When several ships are in on the same day, the Port of A Coruña also uses the Calvo Sotelo Sur quay a little to the south-west. The port says lines from P&O, MSC and Royal Caribbean to Virgin Voyages and Disney call, but not which quay each gets, so check your ship's daily program.

Can you walk into La Coruña from the cruise port?

Yes. La Coruña's cruise terminal is in the city centre: Praza de María Pita, the main square, is 0.3 miles away, about an 8-minute flat walk along the glass-fronted Avenida da Mariña. Celebrity Cruises says most sights can be reached on foot. Ships at the Calvo Sotelo quay are about 0.6 miles from the square, roughly 15 minutes. The stroll map shows the nearest stops.

What to do in La Coruña, Spain from a cruise ship?

In La Coruña you can walk straight off the ship into the city: María Pita square is 0.3 miles away, the old town's churches and the San Agustín market are within about half a mile, and Orzán beach is a 12-minute walk. The Tower of Hercules, the Roman lighthouse, is about 1.5 miles away by taxi, bus or the seafront promenade. Bookable options run from 90-minute boat trips to a 6-hour trip to Santiago de Compostela; see the 4-hour plans.

What's at the La Coruña cruise terminal?

The Port of A Coruña says its cruise terminal on the Muelle de Trasatlánticos has a shop, and Celebrity Cruises says it has a tourist information point, where you can pick up a city map. The city's main tourist office is a few minutes' walk away at Praza de María Pita 6, open until 18:30 on weekdays from February to October and until 17:30 from November to January.

Is there a free shuttle or taxi from the La Coruña cruise port?

You don't need a shuttle in La Coruña: the terminal is in the city centre, 0.3 miles from María Pita square. Celebrity Cruises says taxis can be hailed at the port; they're metered, with maximum fares set by the city council each year. The railway station is about 1.2 miles away, roughly a 10-minute taxi ride.

Beaches & water

Is there a beach near La Coruña cruise port?

Yes. Praia do Orzán, a sandy city beach, is about half a mile from La Coruña's cruise terminal, a 12-minute walk across the narrow city centre to the Atlantic side. Praia de Riazor runs on from it, about 0.6 miles from the ship. Both are on the stroll map route.

Day trips & your time ashore

Can you walk to the Tower of Hercules from the La Coruña cruise port?

Yes, if you have time: the Tower of Hercules is about 1.5 miles from La Coruña's cruise port along the seafront promenade, or a short taxi or bus ride. Its official site calls it the only Roman lighthouse in the world still standing and working. As of October 2026 the site says the tower is closed to visitors from 1 October to 15 November for electrical work, so check before you go. See the 4-hour plans for van, e-bike and Segway tours.

Can I get to Santiago de Compostela from La Coruña on a cruise stop?

Yes. Santiago de Compostela is about 75 km (47 miles) from La Coruña, roughly an hour each way by road. Cruise-only tours meet you inside the port and take about 6 hours with a cathedral visit and a guided walk, timed to your ship. It suits a full-day call; see the full-day plans.

What to do in La Coruña from cruise ship for free?

Plenty of La Coruña is free from the cruise terminal: the glass-fronted Avenida da Mariña, María Pita square, the old town's churches and the walled San Carlos gardens are all within half a mile, and Orzán beach is a 12-minute walk. The San Antón castle museum on the waterfront is about 0.7 miles away and charges a small fee. The stroll map puts them in order.

Money, documents & safety

Do I need euros in La Coruña?

La Coruña uses the euro, like the rest of Spain and the other euro countries listed by the European Union. Cards are widely accepted, but it's handy to carry a little cash too.

Do I need a passport to go ashore in La Coruña?

Spain is in the Schengen area, which the European Union says expects a non-EU visitor's passport to be valid for at least 3 months after leaving and issued within the last 10 years. US Customs lets closed-loop cruisers re-enter the US with a birth certificate and photo ID, but warns ports may still ask for a passport, and you'll need one if you have to fly home.

Is La Coruña safe for cruise passengers?

The US State Department rates Spain, including La Coruña, Level 2 (exercise increased caution) because of terrorism and unrest. It notes that demonstrations are common and lists tourist sites, transport hubs and markets among possible targets, so keep an eye on your surroundings as you would in any city.

What time zone is La Coruña in?

La Coruña is on Central European Time (UTC+1), with summer time (UTC+2) under EU rules; in 2026 the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 25 October. Your ship may keep a different time, so check whether all-aboard is given in ship time or local time.
