Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Civitavecchia, the cruise port for Rome?

Cruise ships for Rome dock at the Port of Civitavecchia, about 40 miles from the city, at docks 10 to 13bis along the Cristoforo Colombo breakwater or at dock 25 on its other side. Port Mobility, which runs the port's transport, says a free shuttle links every cruise dock to the Largo della Pace service center, the port's main hub and exit. The newest terminal, Donato Bramante, is on pier 12, a short distance from the Amerigo Vespucci terminal.

What terminal does Royal Caribbean use in Civitavecchia?

No cruise line has a fixed dock in Civitavecchia: the port's October 2026 schedule shows Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC and Costa ships each at more than one of docks 12bis, 13 and 25 on different days. Princess, Holland America, Virgin Voyages and Viking usually call here too. Your ship's daily program or app will name the dock. It matters less than it sounds, because the free port shuttle takes every dock to the same exit at Largo della Pace.

Can you walk from a cruise ship to Civitavecchia?

Not from the gangway: Civitavecchia's cruise docks are deep inside a working port, so you take the free port shuttle to the exit at Largo della Pace first, a ride of roughly 10 to 15 minutes. From there the town is an easy walk. The old town around Piazza Leandra is about 0.4 miles, around 10 minutes, and Forte Michelangelo about 0.5 miles. The stroll map shows six stops.

Is it worth getting off the ship in Civitavecchia if you're not going to Rome?

Yes, if you want an easy day: Civitavecchia's old town starts about 10 minutes on foot from where the free port shuttle drops you, and walking it costs nothing. Italy's tourism board points to Forte Michelangelo and the historic port, the San Lorenzo market where locals shop every morning, the cathedral and the archaeological museum by the fort. There is no beach, pool or shopping area at the cruise docks themselves, only bars, so staying aboard is the alternative. See the 3-hour plans.

Getting to Rome

How far is Civitavecchia port from Rome?

Civitavecchia port is about 40 miles from Rome, roughly 70 km by road. A regional train takes about 50 to 60 minutes to Roma San Pietro, the stop for the Vatican, and 75 to 85 minutes to Roma Termini. Count the port shuttle and the walk to the station as well: door to door, allow about 2 hours each way from the ship.

How do I get from Civitavecchia cruise port to Rome by train, and how much is it?

Take the free port shuttle to Largo della Pace, then get to Civitavecchia station, about 0.9 miles away: around 20 minutes on foot along the seafront, or a โ‚ฌ6 direct bus from the ships on cruise days, which Port Mobility says you pay for on board. Trains to Rome run about every 30 minutes. A regional single is โ‚ฌ4.60 to Roma San Pietro, Trastevere or Ostiense and โ‚ฌ5 to Termini. The BIRG day ticket, about โ‚ฌ12 to โ‚ฌ14, adds Rome's metro, buses and trams.

How far is the Colosseum from Civitavecchia cruise port?

The Colosseum is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Civitavecchia train station, according to the port's own passenger guide: take the regional train to Roma Ostiense, then metro line B to Colosseo. For St. Peter's and the Vatican the same guide gives about 1 hour 5 minutes, getting off at Roma San Pietro and walking 15 to 20 minutes. The Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are about 1 hour 30 minutes, via Roma Termini and metro line A.

Do I have enough time to see Rome on my own and get back to the ship?

Usually yes on a long call, but Rome from Civitavecchia costs about 2 hours each way from the ship, so a 10-hour call leaves roughly 4.5 to 5 hours in the city and an 8-hour call only 2.5 to 3. Guides advise being back in Civitavecchia 1 to 2 hours before all-aboard, because the ship waits for its own coaches, not for the train. A tour with port pickup removes that risk: see the full-day plans.

How much is a taxi from Civitavecchia port to Rome?

There is no official fixed taxi fare between Civitavecchia port and central Rome, so agree the price before you get in. The one fixed fare is to Fiumicino Airport: โ‚ฌ130 per car, which Holland America also quotes on its port page. Taxis wait at Largo della Pace, where the free port shuttle ends. Shuttle coaches to Roma San Pietro and Roma Termini leave from the same place.

Do I need to book the Vatican and the Colosseum in advance?

Yes for the Colosseum, and it is wise for the Vatican. The Colosseum's official site says entry needs a reserved time slot, tickets carry your name and are checked against ID, and they go on sale 30 days ahead at ticketing.colosseo.it. The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm with final entry at 6:00 pm, and closed Sundays except the last of the month. Their only official ticket site is tickets.museivaticani.va.

Beaches & water

Can you walk to a beach from the Civitavecchia cruise port?

Yes, but it is a longer walk: Civitavecchia's town beach, on the seafront by the Pirgo, is about a mile from the Largo della Pace shuttle stop, roughly 22 minutes on foot past Forte Michelangelo. It is mostly pebbles. You can't walk there straight from the ship; the free port shuttle to Largo della Pace comes first.

Money & documents

Do they take US dollars in Civitavecchia?

No, plan on euros in Civitavecchia and Rome. Italy uses the euro, and the European Commission notes that within the euro area only the euro has the status of legal tender, so don't count on anyone taking dollars. Have some euros before you leave the port: the โ‚ฌ6 bus from the ships to the train station, for one, is paid on board.

Can I use my credit card in Civitavecchia, and are there ATMs?

Yes, cards are widely used in Civitavecchia and Rome: Italy's tourism board says you can pay with the most popular credit cards as well as cash, naming Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and American Express, and banks with 24/7 ATMs are found across Italy. Tipping isn't compulsory; the board says about 10% is customary when you're happy with the service.

Do I need my passport to get off the ship in Civitavecchia?

Italy is in the Schengen area, and the EU's rule for non-EU visitors is a passport valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave and issued within the last 10 years. ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation, is not in operation yet, so there is nothing to apply for. Follow your cruise line's instructions on carrying it ashore, and take photo ID to Rome: the Colosseum checks named tickets against it.

Safety & practical

Is it safe to go to Rome from the cruise port on your own?

The US State Department rates Italy Level 2, exercise increased caution. For a day trip from Civitavecchia the practical risk it names is petty crime: pickpocketing and purse snatching are common in tourist areas and on public transportation, including trains. Keep your phone and wallet zipped away on the train to Rome and around the big sights.

Is there luggage storage at Civitavecchia cruise port?

There is no official luggage storage at Civitavecchia's cruise port, according to Port Mobility, and Holland America says the same of the pier. Private left-luggage services operate near the Varco Fortezza gate by Forte Michelangelo and at the train station, which helps if you want a few hours in town or Rome before or after your cruise.

What time zone is Civitavecchia in? Is it the same as ship time?

Civitavecchia, like all of Italy, is on Central European Time: UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer. EU rules move the clocks forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October. Your ship sets its own clock, so check the all-aboard time in the daily program and whether it matches the time on your phone ashore.

Is the tap water safe to drink in Civitavecchia?

Civitavecchia's tap water met Italy's drinking-water limits in the latest report from Acea Ato 2, the town's water operator: its July 2026 figures for the town centre show coliform bacteria, enterococci and E. coli all compliant, and arsenic and nitrates well under their legal limits. Any order declaring the water undrinkable is posted on the town hall's online notice board.

Is there free Wi-Fi in Civitavecchia?

Yes, in places: Italy's tourism board says many bars, restaurants, attractions and cultural venues offer free Wi-Fi, and the national Piazza Wi-Fi Italia network of free hotspots can be found through the WiFi Italia app, best downloaded before you go ashore. The board also advises checking your phone plan's roaming charges before you rely on mobile data.
