Getting ashore
Where do cruise ships dock in Greenock, Scotland?
Cruise ships dock alongside at Greenock Ocean Terminal on the River Clyde; there are no tenders. In the port's 2026 schedule it handles nearly every big-ship call, from Princess, TUI, Holland America, Oceania, MSC, Celebrity and P&O to Carnival, Norwegian, Virgin Voyages and Disney. Some small expedition ships (Hebridean Princess, some Ponant calls) use the port's Commercial Berth instead, so check the ship's daily program.
Can you walk from Greenock cruise terminal into town?
Yes. Greenock's town centre is a short walk from the cruise terminal: Clyde Square is about 0.3 miles from the terminal building, roughly an 8-minute walk. You first walk from the quayside into the terminal, then straight out into town, and the stroll map shows the waterfront, square and museum within reach on foot.
What is there to do in Greenock cruise port?
Yes, even if you stay close: Greenock Ocean Terminal has the Wyllieum, a free gallery of the Scottish artist George Wyllie, open 10am to 5pm on ship days, plus cafés, shops and a tourist information desk on most ship days. The town centre is about 0.3 miles away, and Greenock Cruise Port points visitors to the McLean Museum and the fire and rescue museum nearby.
Is there a free shuttle from Greenock cruise port to the train station or Glasgow?
No. Greenock Cruise Port says it doesn't provide a shuttle, so you walk or take a taxi. Greenock Central station is about half a mile from the terminal, roughly an 11-minute walk, and taxis wait outside the terminal; the port puts the taxi between the station and the terminal at about 5 minutes and £5 to £7.
Beaches & water
Can you walk to a beach from Greenock cruise port?
No. There's no swimming beach within a walk of Greenock's cruise terminal; the waterfront here is a working harbour and promenade. For time on the water, Loch Lomond's sightseeing cruises leave from Balloch, which the port puts about 45 minutes away by road, with 1-hour and 2-hour trips from $25.99.
Glasgow, Loch Lomond & the Highlands
How do I get from Greenock cruise terminal to Glasgow?
Take the train: Greenock Cruise Port says ScotRail trains between Greenock Central and Glasgow take about 35 to 40 minutes, for about £8.50. Greenock Central is about half a mile from the cruise terminal, an 11-minute walk, or a 5-minute taxi ride. Glasgow city centre is about 26 miles away by road if you'd rather take a taxi the whole way.
Can I get to Loch Lomond on my own from Greenock?
Yes, but it means a taxi or driver: Loch Lomond's sightseeing cruises leave from Balloch village at the south end of the loch, not from the port. Greenock Cruise Port says the southern shore is about 45 minutes away by road; agree the taxi fare before you set off. The 1-hour cruise from $25.99 fits a 3-hour stop.
Can I take a day trip to the Highlands from Greenock cruise port?
Yes. Several 8-hour shore excursions meet at the Greenock cruise terminal and are timed to your ship, including Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond from $89.43 and a West Highlands day to Kilchurn Castle and Inveraray from $105.21. Others add a sheepdog show and Doune Castle, or whisky distilleries and Glasgow; see the full-day plans.
Can I get to Edinburgh from Greenock on a port day?
Only on a long call. Princess Cruises says Edinburgh is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way by road from the Greenock terminal, so a round trip takes up to five hours before you see anything. Glasgow is about 45 minutes away and makes a far easier city day.
Money, phones & documents
What currency does Greenock use, and should I tip?
Greenock uses the pound sterling (£), like the rest of Scotland. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards, and American Express isn't taken everywhere. Greenock Cruise Port says tipping isn't expected and is up to you; Scotland's official visitor site suggests 10 to 15 percent as a kind gesture in restaurants.
Is there Wi-Fi at Greenock cruise port?
Not yet. Greenock Cruise Port says Wi-Fi isn't available at the cruise port but will be introduced. Mobile phones work in Greenock; if you're from outside the UK, turn data roaming on, and check your plan's rates first.
Do I need a passport or a UK ETA for a cruise stop in Greenock?
Bring your passport. US Customs and Border Protection lets US citizens on a closed-loop cruise re-enter with a birth certificate and photo ID, but notes the countries you visit may still require a passport, and you'd want one if you had to leave the ship and fly home. Holland America and Seabourn also tell guests on UK sailings that a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (£20) may be required, depending on nationality.
What time zone is Greenock in?
Greenock keeps UK time: British Summer Time (UTC+1) until the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, then Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+0). In 2027 the clocks go forward on 28 March. Check your all-aboard time against local time in the ship's daily program.
Safety & weather
Is Greenock safe for cruise passengers?
The US State Department rates the United Kingdom, including Scotland, Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, because of the risk of terrorism. The advisory covers the whole country rather than Greenock in particular.
What's the weather like in Greenock, and what should I pack?
Changeable. Greenock Cruise Port says the weather can vary hour to hour, not just day to day, and suggests packing for all four seasons in one day. Bring a waterproof layer and something warm even in summer.
