Getting ashore
Which cruise terminal will my ship use in Kobe?
Cruise ships in Kobe use one of two terminals, and the ship's size usually decides which: big ships go to Kobe Port Terminal on Shinko Pier No. 4, which takes ships up to 230,000 tons, while Naka Pier Cruise Terminal takes ships up to about 77,000 tons. Both are close to downtown. Kobe Port Terminal has its own Port Liner station, 5 minutes from Sannomiya; Naka Pier is a 15-minute walk from Motomachi Station.
Which Kobe cruise terminal does Princess or Royal Caribbean use?
Princess and Royal Caribbean ships usually dock at Kobe Port Terminal, according to the City of Kobe's 2026 schedules, as do Celebrity, Holland America, Norwegian, Carnival, MSC, Costa and Viking. Naka Pier usually takes smaller ships from Silversea, Seabourn and Oceania, while Azamara, Regent Seven Seas and Crystal have used both. Assignments can change, so check your ship's daily program.
Is it worth getting off the ship in Kobe?
Yes: both Kobe terminals sit close to downtown, and from Naka Pier you're about 8 minutes on foot from Meriken Park and Port Tower and 13 minutes from Chinatown. Kobe Port Terminal has an information desk, a currency exchange machine and coin lockers, and its Port Liner station gets you to Sannomiya in about 5 minutes. Port Tower's observation deck is open 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Is Kobe walkable from the cruise port?
Yes from Naka Pier: Kobe's Chinatown, Nankinmachi, is 0.6 miles away, about a 13-minute walk, and Motomachi Station about 15 minutes, with Meriken Park right at the foot of the pier. From Kobe Port Terminal it's about 1.2 miles and 25 minutes to Sannomiya, so most people take the Port Liner from the terminal's own station, about 5 minutes. The stroll map shows the walk from Naka Pier.
Is there a beach near the Kobe cruise port?
No, there's no swimming beach within walking distance of either Kobe cruise terminal. The nearest is Suma Beach, a 1.5 km stretch of sand in western Kobe about 4 miles from the port, which Kobe's official tourism site puts at less than 15 minutes by train from Sannomiya.
Is there a shuttle bus from the Kobe cruise terminal?
Sometimes: the Port of Kobe says it can run free shuttle buses from both terminals to downtown, and night shuttles until 1 a.m. on overnight calls, but whether one runs depends on your ship's call. From Kobe Port Terminal you don't need one, since the Port Liner reaches Sannomiya in about 5 minutes. Near Naka Pier, the City Loop sightseeing bus stops at Port Tower, a 5-minute walk.
Kyoto, Osaka and a day in Kobe
How do I get from the Kobe cruise port to Kyoto?
Take the train: from Sannomiya, Kyoto is about 50 minutes on the JR Special Rapid, or about 45 by subway and bullet train, according to the Port of Kobe. Add the Port Liner from Kobe Port Terminal (about 5 minutes) or a taxi from Naka Pier (about 8 minutes) to Sannomiya. Most 2026 calls run roughly 8 or 9 a.m. to 5β8 p.m., so Kyoto is a long but doable day; private guides who ride the trains with you start at the terminal.
Is Kobe closer to Osaka or Kyoto?
Kobe is closer to Osaka: the Port of Kobe puts Osaka about 20 minutes from Sannomiya on the JR Special Rapid, and Kyoto about 45β50 minutes by train. That's why some itineraries list the port as Kobe/Osaka, and why Osaka fits a port day more easily than Kyoto.
What to do in Kobe in one day?
With one day in Kobe you can stay on the waterfront or go further. Port Tower, Meriken Park and the 45-minute harbor cruises are all within about 10 minutes' walk of Naka Pier, and Chinatown is 13 minutes away. Bookable tours run from 90-minute harbor sailings to 3β5.5 hour city and Kobe beef tours, a Nada sake brewery tour, and 6β8 hour guided days to Kyoto, Osaka or Nara. The stroll map covers the walkable part.
Where can I eat Kobe beef near the cruise port?
Kobe beef is easiest to find in Sannomiya, which tour listings describe as home to many beef restaurants and which is about 5 minutes from Kobe Port Terminal on the Port Liner. If you'd rather book, Kobe tours include a 4-hour sake and Kobe beef outing with a reserved teppanyaki counter seat, and a private half day that starts at Ikuta Shrine.
Money, papers and practicalities
Do I need yen in Kobe, or can I use a card?
Bring some yen: Japan's currency is the yen, and while major cards work in many places, some small shops and restaurants don't take them, says Tokyo's official tourism site. ATMs at 7-Eleven (Seven Bank) and at Japan Post Bank post offices accept international cards. Tipping isn't practiced in Japan, though some places add a service charge.
Do I need a visa for a cruise stop in Kobe?
Usually not: under Japan's landing permission for cruise ship tourists, foreign passengers can go ashore at ports of call like Kobe without a visa, applied for through the ship, as long as the ship is designated for the scheme and you're back aboard before it sails, the Embassy of Japan explains. US citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days anyway. If you fly into or out of Japan, normal entry rules apply.
What airport do you fly into for Kobe?
Kobe has its own airport, Kobe Airport, about 13 minutes from Kobe Port Terminal on the Port Liner; it has regular domestic flights and, since April 2025, some international charters. Kansai International Airport is about 30 minutes from Kobe Airport by the Bay Shuttle high-speed ferry, according to the Port of Kobe.
Is there free Wi-Fi in Kobe?
Yes: the City of Kobe runs KOBE Free Wi-Fi at about 460 locations around the city. Pick the 'KOBE Free Wi-Fi' network, then sign in with a social media account or an email address; each connection lasts 24 hours and you can reconnect as often as you like.
Is Kobe safe for cruise passengers?
Yes: the US State Department rates Japan Level 1, 'Exercise Normal Precautions', for travelers. Japan's national tourism organization also notes that most restaurants serve tap water free if you ask.
