Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Kauai?

Cruise ships dock at Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai's southeast shore, next to Lihue, and passengers walk off at the cruise terminal by Pier 2; there's no tendering. Norwegian's Pride of America calls every week and stays overnight, and Princess, Holland America, Carnival and Oceania ships were on the October 2026 schedule. Day calls usually arrive at 7 or 8 a.m. and leave at 4 or 5 p.m., but check your own itinerary.

Is the Kauai cruise port open after Hurricane Lowell?

Yes, cruise ships are calling at Kauai again: Holland America's Koningsdam docked at Nawiliwili on October 11, 2026, after Hurricane Lowell hit the island in early September and Princess dropped a Kauai stop. Much of the island is still recovering. Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources has Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe state parks closed until further notice, so check what your tour includes before you book.

What is close to the cruise port in Kauai?

Kalapaki Beach and the Anchor Cove and Harbor Mall shops are the closest things to the Kauai cruise port, all within about a 10-minute walk of the terminal. The terminal area itself has no services beyond tour-bus, rental-car and shopping-shuttle pickups, so the shops are where you'll find restaurants, ATMs and restrooms. Lihue's town center is about 2 miles away, a 10-minute drive. See the walking map.

Can I walk from the Kauai cruise port to Lihue?

You can walk to Nawiliwili's waterfront shops but not really to Lihue: Anchor Cove is 0.4 miles from the cruise terminal, about 8 minutes on a sidewalk, and Harbor Mall about 11 minutes. Lihue's civic center on Rice Street, with the Kauai Museum and the banks, is about 2 miles away, a 40-minute walk, so most people take a taxi or drive the 10 minutes. The stroll map shows what's in reach.

Beaches & water

Can you walk to a beach from the Kauai cruise port?

Yes. Kalapaki Beach is a 10-minute walk from the Kauai cruise terminal: its near end is 0.5 miles away, beside the Anchor Cove shops, and the middle of the sand about 0.8 miles. It isn't on the state's list of lifeguarded beaches. Poipu Beach on the south shore is lifeguarded from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but a brown-water advisory was reissued after the hurricane, so check ocean conditions before you swim.

Can I do a Na Pali Coast boat tour from the cruise ship?

Yes, but Na Pali Coast boat tours don't leave from Nawiliwili: they start at Port Allen and Kikiaola harbors on Kauai's west side, a drive across the island. Some Port Allen tours restarted in late September 2026 after the hurricane while others paused into October, and Kikiaola was reported closed, so confirm with the operator that your trip is sailing. With day calls of eight to nine hours, a morning trip of four or five hours is the one that fits; see the full-day plans.

Can I kayak to Secret Falls on a Kauai cruise stop?

Not right now: Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources says access to Uluwehi Falls, known as Secret Falls, is closed after Hurricane Lowell, and hiking past the Wailua River trailhead is prohibited until further notice. Kayakers may still paddle the river and use the designated landing, but individual kayakers can't land at Fern Grotto; only Smith's boat tours go there.

Getting around

Is there a car rental near the Kauai cruise port?

Not at the Kauai cruise terminal itself: the rental counters are at Lihue Airport, about 2.5 miles away. Avis, Budget and Payless run a shuttle to the Nawiliwili pier when a cruise ship is in port, while Alamo and Thrifty/Dollar don't, so their customers take a taxi to the airport. Shuttle times aren't published, so confirm the pickup with your rental company before you sail.

How do I get around Kauai from the cruise port without a rental car?

Taxis and tours are the easy options from the Kauai cruise port; there's no hop-on hop-off bus in the sources we checked. Kauai County's public bus costs $2 a ride or $5 for a day pass and drivers give no change, but its two express routes aren't running after the hurricane. No source publishes taxi fares, so agree on a price before you get in.

How far is the Kauai cruise port from Lihue Airport?

Lihue Airport is about 2.5 miles from the Nawiliwili cruise terminal, where the island's rental-car counters are. Avis, Budget and Payless send a shuttle to the pier on days a ship is in port, and taxis cover the trip for everyone else. Lihue's town center is about 2 miles from the terminal, roughly a 10-minute drive.

Time ashore & excursions

What is the best Kauai excursion for a cruise stop?

For a typical Kauai day call of eight to nine hours, a scenic flight from Lihue or a morning Na Pali Coast boat trip are the classic picks. Planes and helicopters were flying again from Lihue in October 2026, with fewer departures than usual, and Na Pali boats leave from the west side, so book a morning slot and leave time for the drive back before all-aboard. See the 3-hour plans.

Is Waimea Canyon open, and can I see it on a cruise stop?

No, not by road at the moment: Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources says Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe state parks are closed until further notice because of hurricane damage, and Kōkeʻe Road is closed. Tours that list the canyon have to swap in other stops, so ask the operator what's included.

Before you go

What time zone is Kauai in?

Kauai is on Hawaii Standard Time, UTC-10, all year; NIST lists Hawaii among the places that don't change clocks for daylight saving. That puts Kauai two hours behind the Pacific coast in winter and three hours behind in summer. Your ship may keep its own time, so go by the all-aboard time on your daily schedule.

Do I need a passport for a Hawaii cruise stop in Kauai?

No passport is needed for U.S. citizens to visit Kauai itself, because Hawaii is part of the United States. Whether you need one for the cruise depends on the itinerary: Norwegian says an extended South Pacific cruise may need one, and Hawaii sailings that also call in Mexico or Canada do. Check the documents your cruise line asks for.

Do I need cash in Kauai, and where are the ATMs near the cruise port?

Kauai uses U.S. dollars, and U.S. cards work as they do at home. The ATMs closest to the cruise port are at the Anchor Cove and Harbor Mall shops, about a 10-minute walk away; full-service banks are about 1.5 miles away on Rice Street in Lihue.

Is there a sunscreen rule in Kauai?

Yes. Hawaii law bans selling sunscreen that contains oxybenzone or octinoxate on Kauai and the other islands without a prescription, because the chemicals harm coral. It covers what stores sell, not what a visitor brings, so check the label if you buy sunscreen on the island.
