Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Bridgetown, Barbados?

Cruise ships in Bridgetown dock at the Port of Bridgetown, where a single Bridgetown Cruise Terminal serves every line, so Carnival, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess and MSC passengers all come ashore at the same terminal. Barbados Port Inc lists eight cruise berths and which one your ship gets changes with the day's traffic, so check your ship's daily program. Depending on your berth, a free port shuttle runs between the ship and the terminal.

Is it worth getting off the ship in Bridgetown, Barbados?

Yes, for most people: historic downtown Bridgetown is about a mile from the terminal, a walk Barbados Port Inc puts at 20 minutes, and the terminal itself has more than 60 shops, bars and free Wi-Fi if you would rather stay close. Brandons Beach, with a lifeguard on duty, is about 20 minutes north on foot, and the stroll map shows what else is in range. The walk into town costs nothing.

Can I walk from the Bridgetown cruise terminal to downtown?

Yes: downtown Bridgetown is about a mile from the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal, and Barbados Port Inc calls the 20-minute walk safe and pleasurable, while Princess puts it at 25 to 30 minutes. From the main gate you take Trevor's Way, an ocean-side footpath, with the Pelican Craft Centre on your left and the historic shopping district straight ahead. Allow extra if your berth means riding the ship shuttle to the terminal first.

How do taxis from the Bridgetown cruise port work, and what do they cost?

A taxi from the Bridgetown cruise terminal to downtown takes about 5 minutes, and Barbados Port Inc says around 255 authorized taxis serve the port, marked with an "Authorized Seaport Taxi" sticker, with a dispatch centre as you leave the terminal. The port posts no fares, so agree the price before you set off and check whether it is per person or per trip, and in Barbados or US dollars. Expect heavy traffic on weekday mornings and late afternoons.

Can you book Bridgetown excursions without the ship, and where do they meet?

Yes, you can book Bridgetown tours without going through the ship: Barbados Port Inc says pre-booked tours leave from the terminal's Tour Departure Area, and several operators say their buses load at Tour Departure Gate 1. You may need the ship shuttle to reach the terminal first. Not every trip starts there: the Carlisle Bay turtle cruise leaves from the bay, so read each meeting point and keep a margin before all-aboard.

Beaches & water

Can you walk to a beach from the Bridgetown cruise port?

Yes: Brandons Beach is about a 20-minute walk north of the Bridgetown cruise terminal, roughly a mile, with calm water for swimming, a lifeguard on duty, and food and drinks. Brighton Beach adjoins it but has no lifeguard or restroom. The Carlisle Bay beaches, where the boat trips go, are about 2 miles away, a walk of roughly 40 minutes, so most people take a taxi there.

How far is Carlisle Bay from the Bridgetown cruise port?

Browne's Beach on Carlisle Bay is about 2 miles from the Bridgetown cruise terminal, a walk of roughly 40 minutes, so a taxi is the easier way there. Barbados Port Inc posts no taxi fares, so agree the price and the currency before you go, and fix a pick-up time if you want a ride back. Pebbles Beach lies just south of Browne's.

Where can you snorkel with turtles near the Bridgetown cruise port?

Carlisle Bay is where Bridgetown's turtle and shipwreck snorkeling trips run, with boat tours that swim with sea turtles and snorkel wrecks lying in as little as 12 feet of water. The 1.5-hour Carlisle Bay cruise leaves from the bay, not the terminal, so arrive 20 minutes early, while the 5-hour catamaran trip can collect you at the terminal if you arrange it in advance. Both need a signed waiver.

Time & money

How much time do I need for a Bridgetown excursion?

Bridgetown listings run from a 2-hour guided walk that starts about 100 metres from the port gates, through a 3-hour historic walk and a 4-hour island highlights tour from the terminal's Gate 1, up to full-day island, rum and boat trips of 5 to 7 hours. Add the time to reach the terminal from your ship, which may mean the ship shuttle, and leave a margin before all-aboard.

What time is it in Barbados, and is it ship time or local time?

Barbados is on Atlantic Standard Time (UTCโˆ’4) all year with no daylight saving, so it matches Eastern time in the US summer months and runs an hour ahead of Eastern in winter. Many ships keep their home-port clock and give all-aboard times in ship time, so check which clock your ship is using. Royal Caribbean says the ship will not wait for any guest faring on their own.

What currency do I need in Barbados, and are US dollars accepted?

Barbados uses the Barbados dollar, which the Central Bank of Barbados says is fixed at 2 to 1 against the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted at attractions and shops. Princess says major credit cards work at restaurants, hotels and tour operators, while cash is handy for small markets, ZR vans and taxis. Taxi fares may be quoted in either currency, so ask which before you agree.

Is there Wi-Fi at the Bridgetown cruise terminal?

Yes: Barbados Port Inc says the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal has free Wi-Fi for passengers and crew, along with more than 60 shops and bars. On land, phones roam on local networks under your plan's international terms, while the ship's own cellular network is billed separately as cruise roaming, so check your plan before you leave the terminal.

Safety & documents

Is Bridgetown, Barbados safe for cruise passengers?

Yes: the US State Department rates Barbados Level 1, "Exercise normal precautions", and calls it generally safe for travelers. It adds that petty crime is common in popular tourist locations and that most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity such as purse snatching and pickpocketing, so keep your bag close downtown and on the beach.

Do I need a passport for a Barbados cruise stop?

On a closed-loop cruise, US citizens can re-enter the US with a birth certificate plus government photo ID, according to US Customs and Border Protection, but CBP warns that the countries you visit may still require a passport, so bring one. If you have to fly home from Barbados, for example after missing the ship, you need a passport book.
