Getting ashore
Where do cruise ships dock in Naples, Italy?
Cruise ships in Naples dock at Molo Angioino, at the Stazione Marittima terminal right below the city centre, so you walk off rather than take a tender. The port authority names it as the cruise quay, and the terminal operator says it has seven berths. MSC, Costa, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Viking, Holland America and Carnival usually call here. Next door, Molo Beverello is the ferry pier for Capri and Sorrento, not a cruise berth.
How far is Naples town from the cruise port?
The Naples cruise terminal is in town: Piazza Municipio and Castel Nuovo are about 0.4 to 0.5 miles away, around a 10-minute walk, and Piazza del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace is about 0.6 miles, 12 to 15 minutes. The old town starts at Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, about 0.8 miles or a 17 to 20 minute walk. Municipio metro station on Line 1 is under the square by the port. See the walking map.
What is there to do in Naples from the cruise port?
Plenty within a short walk of the Naples cruise terminal: the terminal itself has shops, restaurants and a pharmacy, and Castel Nuovo is around a 10-minute walk away (€10, closed Sundays). Around Piazza del Plebiscito, 12 to 15 minutes on foot, the Royal Palace costs €15 and its garden is free, and the San Carlo opera house runs 30-minute tours in English at 11:30 and 15:30 for €9. See the walking map.
Beaches & water
Can you walk to a beach from the Naples cruise port?
Not easily: the nearest beach to the Naples cruise terminal is Lido Mappatella, a small city beach on the Via Caracciolo seafront about 1.9 miles away, roughly a 40-minute walk past Castel dell'Ovo. It's a town beach rather than a resort strand, so treat it as a seafront stroll, not a swim plan.
Pompeii, Vesuvius & the islands
How do I get from the Naples cruise port to Pompeii?
Pompeii is about 25 km (16 miles) from the Naples cruise port, and the cheapest way there is EAV's Circumvesuviana train: walk about 1.3 miles (25 to 30 minutes) to Porta Nolana, where direct trains leave roughly every 36 minutes and reach Pompei Scavi in 32 to 37 minutes. The city's fixed taxi fare is €70 one way. The site opens at 9:00; from mid-October last entry is 15:30, and tickets are €20 or €25. See the full-day trips.
How do I get to Herculaneum from the Naples cruise port?
Herculaneum is about 12 km (7.5 miles) from the Naples cruise port, on the same Circumvesuviana line as Pompeii: only some trains stop at Ercolano Scavi, about 15 minutes from Piazza Garibaldi, so check the timetable for that stop. The site opens daily at 8:30; from mid-October last entry is 15:30, and a ticket is €16.
Can I visit Mount Vesuvius from the Naples cruise port?
Yes, but plan it: tickets for the Vesuvius crater path are sold only online, in timed slots released 30 days ahead, at €11.68, and the last entry to the crater is 16:00 in October and 15:00 from November to February. The path closes during weather alerts. The city's fixed taxi fare from Naples to the national park is €65 one way, or book a trip that includes transport. See the full-day trips.
How far is Capri from the Naples cruise port, and can I get there by ferry?
Yes: hydrofoils to Capri leave from Molo Beverello, about 0.2 miles on foot from the Naples cruise terminal, and the crossing usually takes about 50 minutes with SNAV or NLG. Departures run from about 7 am until early evening, so pick a return that leaves you well ahead of all-aboard.
How far is Sorrento from the Naples cruise port?
Sorrento is about 50 km (31 miles) from the Naples cruise port. The Circumvesuviana train from Porta Nolana takes about 72 to 77 minutes, hydrofoils run there from Molo Beverello next to the terminal, and the city's fixed taxi fare is €125 one way.
Getting around
How much is a taxi from the Naples cruise port?
Naples taxis have official fixed fares from the port set by the city: €15.50 to Stazione Centrale, €11 to the historic centre, €13 to the Archaeological Museum and €10 to the Via Partenope seafront. Ask for the fixed fare (tariffa predeterminata) before you set off; the driver can't refuse, must give you a receipt, and the meter should show F0.00. Fares are per car, luggage included.
How do I get from Naples airport or the train station to the cruise port?
A taxi is simplest: the city's fixed fare between the Naples port and the airport is €24, and between the port and Stazione Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) €15.50, per car with luggage included. Ask for the fixed fare before you set off. Municipio metro station on Line 1 is under the square by the port.
Money, safety & documents
Do I need euros in Naples, and should I tip?
Yes, bring some euros: the euro is the only legal tender in Italy, and while Visa and Mastercard work in most places, some coffee bars, kiosks and small shops take cash only. Use bank ATMs, and if a terminal offers to charge in dollars, choose euros. Tipping isn't required; the coperto on a bill is a cover charge, and if service is already added, nothing more is expected.
Is Naples safe for cruise passengers?
The US State Department rates Italy as a whole Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, citing terrorism. Its main warning for visitors is petty crime: pickpocketing and purse snatching are common at busy tourist sites and on public transport, including trains, so keep valuables zipped away in Naples' crowds and on the Circumvesuviana.
Do I need a passport for Naples on a cruise?
Your cruise line sets what you carry ashore, but the EU's own rule for Italy is that a non-EU visitor's passport should be valid at least 3 months after you leave the EU and have been issued within the last 10 years. ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation, isn't running yet, so there's nothing to apply for now.
