How we checked these answers
Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.
Getting ashore
Where do cruise ships dock in Funchal?
Cruise ships dock alongside at the Port of Funchal, on the south coast of Madeira beside the city centre; none of the guides we read describe tendering. The port authority, APRAM, lists four cruise quays: Cais Norte, Cais 2, Cais 3 and Cais 8. We couldn't find a published list tying a cruise line to a quay, so check your berth in the ship's daily program.
Is it worth getting off the ship in Funchal?
Yes for most people: the city centre is about 0.6 miles from the cruise terminal, a 15 to 20 minute walk, and the Farmers' Market and the old town are within about a mile. A guide says the terminal has a few shops, but there is little reason to stay there. The stroll map shows what's reachable on foot, including a small pebble beach about 0.9 miles away.
Can you walk into Funchal from a cruise port?
Yes. The city centre is about 1 km (0.6 miles) from the cruise terminal, and two guides put the walk at 15 to 20 minutes, slightly uphill, depending on which quay your ship uses. The pavement is uneven and one guide says it isn't suited to wheelchair users; Visit Madeira, the regional tourism board, describes the main attractions as two minutes from the port by car.
Can you walk to a beach from the Funchal cruise port?
Only to a small one. The nearest beach we found is Praia do Almirante Reis in the old town, about 0.9 miles from the cruise terminal, roughly a 20 to 25 minute walk, and it's mapped as a pebble beach rather than sand. We haven't confirmed facilities or swimming conditions. It's on the stroll map.
How do I get from the Funchal cruise port to the city center?
Most people walk it: the centre is about 0.6 miles away and takes 15 to 20 minutes. Taxis wait right outside the port exit and use meters for city rides, and some cruise lines run a shuttle to the centre, free on some ships and for a small fee on others. Open-top hop-on hop-off buses run from near the port. We found no official taxi tariff, so ask the driver to use the meter.
Things to do
Is Funchal Old Town worth visiting?
Yes if you like walking: the Zona Velha, on the east side of the centre, is known for narrow streets and painted doors, and it holds the Madeira Story Centre museum and the cable car's lower station. It's about 0.9 miles from the cruise terminal, so budget a 20-minute walk each way. The stroll map covers the Farmers' Market on the way, which is busiest in the morning.
How many hours do I need for the Funchal cruise port?
About 3 hours covers a walk into the centre plus a small-boat whale trip or a tuk-tuk to Monte; 5 hours fits a catamaran, kayak or food walk; and the 7 to 8 hour island tours need most of the day. The walks and boats meet in the city centre or at the marina, and the island tours' listings don't name the cruise terminal for pickup. See the 5-hour plans for options.
How much is the Monte toboggan ride?
About 20 euros per person for the sledge ride itself, paid on the spot at Monte. It's a roughly 2 km run down in a wicker basket sledge, steered by two men in white. Guided tuk-tuk tours take about 20 minutes to climb to Monte from the old town, and the tour price doesn't include the sledge ticket.
Do whale and dolphin trips leave from near the Funchal cruise port?
Yes, they leave from the Funchal marina. The listings we opened run 2 to 3 hours and ask you to check in 20 to 30 minutes before departure, and the boats leave on time. Sightings aren't guaranteed on every trip, but the Blue Safari listing gives a free second ticket if nothing is seen.
Money, time & safety
What currency do I need in Funchal?
Funchal uses the euro, and cards are widely accepted. Carry a few euros in coins for small purchases such as a market snack, and expect tour operators to take cards when you book ahead online.
What time is it in Funchal compared with ship time?
Funchal keeps Western European Time (UTC+0) in winter and Western European Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer; the clocks go back one hour on 25 October 2026. Ships don't always run on shore time, so confirm the all-aboard time in your daily program and keep it in the ship's time.
What to be careful of in Madeira?
Petty theft is the thing to watch. The US State Department rates Portugal Level 1, exercise normal precautions, and advises vigilance against petty theft in crowded tourist areas and on public transportation. Keep valuables out of sight in markets and on buses.
