Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Bergen, Norway?

Cruise ships in Bergen, Norway, dock at one of five quays the Port of Bergen lists: Skolten North and South, Bontelabo and Festningskaien beside Bergenhus Fortress, or Jekteviken on the Nøstet side of the harbour. From Skolten and Bontelabo the port puts the Fish Market about 900 meters away along Bryggen. Jekteviken is an industrial quay about half a mile from the main square, which you walk to through Nøstet or reach by the port shuttle when it runs.

Where do the Viking cruise ships dock in Bergen?

Neither the Port of Bergen nor Viking publishes which quay Viking ships use in Bergen, so no line can be tied to a berth in advance. All five cruise quays are close to town: Skolten, Bontelabo and Festningskaien sit by Bergenhus Fortress, about 900 meters from the Fish Market along Bryggen, and Jekteviken is about half a mile from the main square. Your ship's daily program or app names the quay for your call.

Can you walk into Bergen from the cruise port?

Yes, you can walk into Bergen from every cruise quay. From Skolten it's about 0.6 miles (around 14 minutes) along the harbour past Bergenhus Fortress and Bryggen to the Fish Market and Tourist Information. From Jekteviken, walk out through Nøstet: Torgallmenningen, the main square, is about 0.5 miles (around 11 minutes), or use the port shuttle when your ship's program lists one. The stroll map shows the walk from Skolten.

What to do in Bergen from a cruise ship?

Yes: in Bergen the main sights start within a 7-minute walk of the Skolten quay, and several cost nothing. Bergenhus Fortress grounds are free to enter, the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf and its passages of shops and studios are about 0.4 miles away, and the Fish Market is about 0.6 miles. The Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen leaves every 10 to 15 minutes from a station about 15 minutes' walk from the ship. For longer calls, the 5-hour plans add food, kayaking or a mountain hike.

How far is the Bergen funicular from the cruise port?

The Fløibanen funicular's city station in Bergen is about 0.6 miles from the Skolten cruise quay, around a 15-minute walk along Bryggen, and about 0.7 miles (17 minutes) from Jekteviken. Fløyen says it runs every 10 to 15 minutes, more often when busy. From April 1 to September 30 an adult return is NOK 200 bought by app, web or machine, or NOK 220 at the office; the rest of the year it's NOK 145.

Beaches & fjords

Is there a beach near the Bergen cruise port?

No, there's no sandy beach within walking distance of the Bergen cruise port. The nearest place to swim is Nordnes Sjøbad, a 25-meter heated saltwater pool kept at about 30°C with sea swimming alongside, open for the summer season from June to September. It's about 0.7 miles from Jekteviken, but from Skolten it's across the harbour, about 1.5 miles on foot.

Is a Bergen fjord cruise worth it?

Yes, if you want to see a fjord on a Bergen port day: the Mostraumen trip leaves from the quay by the Fish Market and is back in 3.5 hours. It sails past Bryggen into the Osterfjord to the narrow Mostraumen strait and close to a waterfall, rain or shine, from $77.16 on GetYourGuide. A faster RIB boat version takes 2.5 hours from $158.04. Both are in our favorites.

Getting around

How do I get to the Ulriken cable car from the cruise port?

Ulriken643, which runs the Ulriken cable car, operates a shuttle bus from the Jekteviken cruise port straight to the cable car every 30 minutes, with a round-trip ticket covering the bus and the ride. From the city centre, its Ulriken Express bus leaves every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 18:30 between April 1 and October 15, takes about 10 minutes and costs NOK 150 return; the last bus back is at 18:15.

Is there a hop-on hop-off bus from the Bergen cruise port?

Yes, Gray Line's hop-on hop-off bus in Bergen starts at the cruise terminal (stop 1) on cruise-arrival days, leaving every 30 minutes from 10:00. Its loop has 13 stops, including Bryggen, the Fish Market, the aquarium and the Fløibanen funicular, and takes about 50 minutes if you stay on. City Sightseeing runs a second hop-on hop-off line.

How far is Bergen airport from the cruise terminal?

Bergen Airport Flesland is about 20 to 30 minutes from the city centre by taxi, and Visit Bergen puts the fare at NOK 580 to NOK 890. Taxis wait at ranks in the city centre. Expect high fares for any taxi ride in Bergen.

Money & shopping

Do I need Norwegian kroner in Bergen, and do you tip?

You can get by in Bergen without Norwegian kroner (NOK) for most things: Visit Norway says debit and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, Visa and Mastercard most widely, while foreign currency, dollars included, is rarely taken. A little cash helps for small purchases. Tipping is optional and not common; Visit Norway says people tip bars and restaurants when they're happy, typically 5 to 15 percent.

Are shops open in Bergen on Sunday?

Mostly no: Visit Bergen says shops in Bergen are closed on Sundays, except in December. On other days smaller shops open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 15:00. The indoor Fish Market hall stays open on Sundays (10:00 to 21:30 in 2026), so a Sunday call still has food and seafood by the harbour.

Safety, time & documents

Is Bergen safe for cruise passengers?

Yes, Bergen is generally safe: the US State Department rates Norway Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, its lowest level. It advises watching your wallet, phone and bags in busy tourist spots, and being aware of landslides and avalanches in Norway's steep terrain. In an emergency, dial 113 for an ambulance, 112 for police or 110 for fire.

Can I drink the tap water in Bergen?

Yes, Bergen's tap water is safe to drink: Visit Bergen says Norway's water quality is excellent. You can refill a bottle for free at city water fountains, including the one at the Fish Market.

What time zone is Bergen in?

Bergen is on Central European Time (UTC+1), moving to summer time (UTC+2) on the same dates as the EU. Go by the all-aboard time in your ship's daily program: cruise lines don't wait for passengers running late from their own plans.

Do I need a passport or visa for Bergen?

US citizens don't need a visa for Bergen: they can visit Norway for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without one. Visit Norway says the EU Entry/Exit System, which records a photo, fingerprints and passport details, is now fully operational, and ETIAS is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026.
