Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Curaçao?

Cruise ships in Curaçao dock in Willemstad's Otrobanda district, at either the Mega Pier or Mathey Wharf. The Mega Pier, which juts into the sea just outside St. Anna Bay, has two berths and takes most large ships, up to the Oasis class. Mathey Wharf, inside the bay near the Queen Juliana Bridge, serves smaller ships. The Curaçao Ports Authority lists customs, an information booth, free Wi-Fi, car rental, a taxi stand and souvenir shops at the Mega Pier terminal.

Which pier does Carnival or Royal Caribbean use in Curaçao?

Carnival and Royal Caribbean ships usually dock at Curaçao's Mega Pier, as do Princess, Celebrity, MSC, Norwegian, Virgin Voyages and Holland America; the Oasis-class ships take its larger Tula Pier berth. Mathey Wharf usually gets smaller ships such as Regent Seven Seas, Windstar and Ponant, plus the odd mid-size ship on a busy day. Assignments can change, so check your ship's daily program. Both piers are in Otrobanda, about half a mile from Punda.

Is Curaçao a tender port?

No, Curaçao is a docking port: ships tie up at the Mega Pier or Mathey Wharf in Willemstad rather than anchoring offshore. On the Curaçao Ports Authority's schedule for late 2026, every cruise call is assigned a berth and none is listed as tendering, so you walk straight off the ship into Otrobanda.

Is Curaçao walkable from the cruise port?

Yes. Downtown Willemstad is about a 10–15 minute walk from the Mega Pier, through Rif Fort and across the Queen Emma Bridge to the Handelskade waterfront in Punda, about half a mile in all. Mathey Wharf is a similar distance. The floating bridge is free to cross, and when it swings open for a ship, free ferries carry people over; it was also closed for renovation from August 2026. The stroll map has six stops with walking times.

What are the best things to do at the Curaçao cruise port?

Even without a tour, the Curaçao cruise port puts you a 10–15 minute walk from Willemstad's old town and harbor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can walk through Rif Fort, cross the free Queen Emma pontoon bridge, and see the Handelskade waterfront and Fort Amsterdam in Punda. The Mega Pier terminal has souvenir shops, drinks and free Wi-Fi if you'd rather stay close. For a beach you'll need a taxi: Mambo Beach is about 3 miles away. The stroll map shows what's in walking range.

Is the Queen Emma Bridge open?

Willemstad's Queen Emma Bridge was closed from August 2, 2026 for a renovation converting it to electric power, with reopening planned around October 1, so check its status on your day ashore. Either way you can still get from Otrobanda to Punda: ferries ran around the clock during the closure, and free ferries cross beside the bridge whenever it swings open for a passing ship.

Beaches

Can you walk to a beach from the Curaçao cruise port?

No, there's no swimming beach within a realistic walk of the Curaçao cruise port. The closest of the popular beaches, Mambo Beach, is about 3 miles from the piers, so take a taxi from the stand at the terminal; Cruise Hive puts the fare at about $23 and entry at $3.50. Taxis aren't metered, so agree the price before you get in.

Which beaches can I reach on a cruise day in Curaçao?

On a Curaçao cruise day, Mambo Beach is the easy one: about 3 miles from the port by taxi, with bars and restaurants along it. The west-coast beaches such as Cas Abao are roughly 40 minutes away, and the Curaçao Tourist Board says those suit a rental car or a tour. Public minibuses also link the main beaches to Otrobanda and Punda in 10 to 40 minutes. The beach and turtle tours handle the driving for you.

Getting around

Where can I rent a car near the cruise terminal in Curaçao?

At the cruise terminal itself: the Curaçao Ports Authority lists car rental at the Mega Pier terminal, and several rental companies offer pickup at the pier. The Curaçao Tourist Board says day rentals typically start around $35 to $45. A car makes most sense for the west-coast beaches, such as Cas Abao, which are roughly 40 minutes' drive away.

How much are taxis from the Curaçao cruise port?

Taxis at the Curaçao cruise port aren't metered: they're government-regulated and mostly charge standard fares, so the Curaçao Tourist Board advises agreeing the price for your destination before you get in. As a guide, Cruise Hive puts a ride to Mambo Beach at about $23. There's no Uber or Lyft on the island. Celebrity Cruises suggests tipping drivers 10–20%.

Is Curaçao on the same time as my ship?

Curaçao runs on Atlantic Standard Time all year with no daylight saving, so from March to November it matches US Eastern time and in winter it's an hour ahead. Your ship may keep a different clock, so check which one all-aboard is given in. Most calls run from about 8:00am to 5:00 or 6:00pm, and the ship won't wait for passengers late from their own plans.

Money, documents & safety

What currency is used in Curaçao, and can I use US dollars?

Curaçao's currency is the Caribbean guilder (Cg), which replaced the Netherlands Antillean guilder in 2025 and is fixed at US$1 = Cg 1.79, but you don't need any: the Curaçao Tourist Board says US dollars are accepted everywhere. Shops usually count US$1 as Cg 1.82, and change often comes back in guilders. Many restaurants add a service charge; without one, 15–20% is the usual tip.

Do I need a passport for Curaçao on a cruise?

If you're a US citizen on a cruise that starts and ends in the same US port, US Customs and Border Protection lets you return with a birth certificate and government photo ID, though it warns the countries you visit may still ask for a passport. If you miss the ship in Curaçao and have to fly home, you'll need a passport book, so bringing one is the safer choice.

Is Curaçao safe for cruise passengers?

Yes, Curaçao is generally safe: the US State Department rates it Level 1, its lowest, and says crime rates are low. Its advice for visitors is to watch for petty theft and overcharging in tourist areas, where tourist police are on hand. It also warns that bringing any ammunition into Curaçao, even a spent shell casing, is illegal and can lead to arrest.

Is there free Wi-Fi at the Curaçao cruise terminal?

Yes. The Curaçao Ports Authority lists complimentary Wi-Fi at the Mega Pier cruise terminal, and Cruise Hive reports 30 free minutes at both terminals before you're asked for card details. That's enough to check messages before you head into town.
