Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Ocho Rios, Jamaica?

Cruise ships dock alongside a pier in Ocho Rios, so there is no tendering. Turtle Bay Pier is the main berth, closest to town, with a taxi line, an information booth, local vendor shops and tour-operator booths. Reynolds Pier (also called James Bond Pier) is the second berth, used when more than one ship is in port, and has little beyond benches and a few taxis. Your ship's berth is set for each call, so check the daily program.

Which pier does Carnival use in Ocho Rios, and what other cruise lines go there?

Carnival, Princess, MSC, Holland America, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Cunard and TUI ships are among the lines that call at Ocho Rios, and guides add Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Virgin Voyages and Costa. We found no reliable list of which line uses which pier: guides call Turtle Bay the default berth for the major lines and Reynolds the overflow when a second ship is in. Carnival is no exception, so confirm your berth in the ship's daily program or app.

Is the Ocho Rios cruise port open after Hurricane Melissa?

Yes. The Ocho Rios cruise pier reopened to ships on 11 November 2025, after about 20 months closed for repairs to damage from February 2024, and Hurricane Melissa had hit Jamaica two weeks earlier. Holland America's Zuiderdam and MSC Divina were the first ships in. Dunn's River Falls reopened the same day, according to the Jamaica Information Service.

Can I walk from the Ocho Rios cruise pier to town?

Yes. From Turtle Bay Pier the clock tower on Main Street is about 0.6 miles, roughly a 13-minute walk, and Island Village, Margaritaville and Oceans 11 are within about 0.3 miles on the way. From Reynolds Pier it is about 0.8 miles, around 15 to 18 minutes, partly along a busy road. The stroll map shows each stop and its distance.

Is there anything to do at the Ocho Rios cruise port without an excursion?

Yes, even without an excursion: Island Village, Margaritaville and Oceans 11 are all within about 0.3 miles of Turtle Bay Pier, and Turtle Beach is about 7 minutes away on foot. The pier itself has restrooms, a covered waiting area, vendor shops and an information booth, and Main Street's craft market and clock tower are 10 to 13 minutes' walk. Walking costs nothing; the stroll map lists the stops.

How far is Margaritaville from the Ocho Rios cruise port?

Margaritaville Ocho Rios is about 0.2 miles from Turtle Bay Pier, roughly a 6-minute walk, near Island Village's shops and restaurants. The stroll map shows it alongside Oceans 11, the closest restaurant to the pier, about 0.1 miles away.

Excursions & Dunn’s River Falls

How far is Dunn’s River Falls from the cruise port, and is it open?

Dunn's River Falls is a short taxi ride from the Ocho Rios cruise port, about two miles on the map, and guides say less than three miles. The Jamaica Information Service reported that the falls reopened on 11 November 2025, after the Urban Development Corporation finished safety checks. The climb is wet and slippery, so one operator advises water shoes with grip and 45 to 90 minutes in the park. No current admission price was found.

Can I visit Dunn’s River Falls without a ship excursion?

Yes, you can reach Dunn's River Falls by taxi from the pier without booking a tour. It is about two miles away, taxis wait at the pier but are not metered, so look at the rate board and agree the total fare before you get in. The falls reopened on 11 November 2025, and one operator says to wear grippy water shoes and allow 45 to 90 minutes for the climb. Tours that include entry are on the excursion picks.

What is the Blue Hole in Ocho Rios?

The Blue Hole is a natural limestone sinkhole near Ocho Rios filled with vivid blue water, where people swim, swing from ropes and dive from cliffs. Guides put it about 20 to 25 minutes by taxi from the port, and it is usually paired with Dunn's River Falls on a half-day tour, giving the Blue Hole about an hour. See the excursion picks for tours that include it.

Can I book an Ocho Rios excursion on my own instead of through the ship?

Yes. Many independent Ocho Rios tours pick up from the cruise terminal or port, offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and at least one asks cruise passengers for their ship name, docking time and re-boarding time when booking. Taxis also wait at the pier if you would rather go on your own. Compare tour lengths with your all-aboard time on the excursion picks.

Getting around & money

How do taxis work at the Ocho Rios cruise port?

Taxis at the Ocho Rios pier are not metered, so agree the total fare before you get in. Use a licensed one, with a Jamaica Tourist Board decal or from the JUTA association, and look at the rate board at the pier. You can pay in US or Jamaican dollars. We found no current fare list, so none is quoted here.

Do I need Jamaican dollars in Ocho Rios, or are US dollars accepted?

You mostly don't need Jamaican dollars in Ocho Rios, because US dollars are accepted in most tourist areas, and taxis take either currency. Change may come back in Jamaican dollars, and ATMs at Island Village and in town dispense Jamaican dollars, so carry a little local cash for small purchases.

Beaches & water

Can you walk to a beach from the Ocho Rios cruise port?

Yes. Turtle Beach is about 0.3 miles from Turtle Bay Pier, a 7-minute walk, and about 0.5 miles (12 minutes) from Reynolds Pier. Mahogany Beach is farther, about a mile east along Main Street, so a taxi may suit a hot day. We couldn't confirm current entry fees, so check at the gate. The stroll map shows both.

Safety & documents

Is the Ocho Rios cruise port safe?

The US State Department rates Jamaica Level 2, "Exercise Increased Caution," because of crime and health risks, in an advisory published in June 2026. That level covers the whole country rather than the cruise port alone, so read the full advisory on the State Department's travel site before you go.

Do I need a passport for Ocho Rios on a closed-loop cruise?

On a closed-loop cruise, US citizens can re-enter the US with a birth certificate plus a government photo ID, according to US Customs and Border Protection, which warns that the countries you visit may still require a passport. If you miss the ship and must fly home from Jamaica, you would need a passport book.

What time is it in Ocho Rios, and does Jamaica change its clocks?

Ocho Rios is on Eastern Standard Time, UTC-5, all year, because Jamaica does not use daylight saving time. Since clocks there never change, check whether your ship runs on ship time or local time and watch the all-aboard time.
