Getting ashore
Where do cruise ships dock in Heraklion?
Cruise ships dock in Heraklion rather than tender, at Pier II or Pier IV-V of the main port, where the Heraklion Port Authority says up to five ships can berth. Pier IV-V has the cruise passenger terminal that opened in 2017. A shuttle bus usually runs from the berth to the passenger terminal at the port gate, about a five-minute ride, and the old Venetian harbour is a walk from there.
Which pier does my cruise line use in Heraklion?
No cruise line has a fixed pier in Heraklion: the Heraklion Port Authority's 2026 schedule gives each call either Pier II or Pier IV-V, and moves the same ship between them on different days (MSC Lirica, for example, is at Pier IV-V on 26 October and Pier II on 17 November). Viking, MSC, Regent Seven Seas and AIDA ships all appear at both. Your ship's daily program has the berth for your call.
Is Heraklion walkable from the cruise port?
Yes, Heraklion is walkable from the cruise port: the Venetian harbour and Koules fortress are about 1 mile from Pier IV-V, roughly a 20-minute walk along the port road and seafront, and Lions Square is about 1.3 miles. If the port shuttle drops you at the passenger terminal by the gate, Koules is only about 0.6 miles away. The stroll map shows the stops in walking order.
What to do in Heraklion from a cruise ship?
Yes: Heraklion's old town starts about a 20-minute walk from the ship, at Koules, the Venetian fortress right beside the port. Beyond it are Lions Square, the open-air market on 1866 Street (Monday to Saturday) and the Archaeological Museum (20 euros). The passenger terminal has Wi-Fi if you'd rather stay close. With 5 hours you can add a Knossos tour; with 7, a sail to Dia Island.
Are there taxis at the Heraklion cruise port?
Yes, taxis wait in front of the Heraklion port, and Celebrity Cruises warns that fares can be expensive; no official fare table was found, so ask the driver for the fare before you set off. The cheaper option is the city bus: the 'Port' stop and the central bus station are across the road from the port entrance, and a city ticket costs 1.30 or 1.80 euros bought before boarding.
Beaches & water
Is there a beach near the Heraklion cruise port?
No, there's no swimming beach within walking distance of the Heraklion cruise port. The nearest is Ammoudara, more than 3 miles west of the passenger terminal, and city bus line 6 goes there.
Things to do
Can I get to Knossos on my own from the cruise port?
Yes, you can reach Knossos from the Heraklion cruise port on your own, by city bus line 2 or by taxi. The Ministry of Culture gives bus no. 2 'Knossos' as the way there; it runs from the bus station across the road from the port, and a ticket is 1.30 or 1.80 euros (2.30 or 2.80 bought on board), or 5 euros for a day ticket. A taxi takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
How much is Knossos and how long do I need there?
Knossos costs 20 euros (10 euros reduced), according to Greece's Ministry of Culture, and you should allow about 1.5 to 2 hours at the site. In summer it opens at 08:00, with closing time stepping down from 20:00 in April to 18:00 from mid-October; from 1 November it's open 08:30 to 17:00. The site has almost no shade, and tour buses start arriving in numbers by about 10:30, so go early.
When is the Heraklion Archaeological Museum open?
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is open 08:00 to 20:00 in summer, except Wednesdays, when it opens at 13:00, according to Greece's Ministry of Culture. From November through April it's 08:30 to 15:30 (Wednesdays 10:00 to 17:00). Tickets are 20 euros for a set time slot, from the booth or hhticket.gr; the old combined ticket with Knossos is no longer valid.
Can I do a Dia Island boat trip on a port day?
Yes, a Dia Island boat trip fits a Heraklion port day if you take a morning departure. The small-group sail on this page meets at 09:10 at the Old Venetian Port beside Koules and runs 5.5 hours, with swim and snorkel stops and a meal. The crossing takes about 70 to 80 minutes, and operators ask for your passport or ID number when you book because the port police require it.
Where is the market in Heraklion?
Heraklion's market is on 1866 Street (Odos 1866) in the old town, an open-air market that Celebrity Cruises says runs Monday to Saturday, with a fish market on a side street off it.
Money & documents
Do I need euros in Heraklion?
Yes, you'll want euros in Heraklion, since Greece uses the euro, though cards are widely accepted and Celebrity Cruises suggests carrying some cash for small shops and markets. Tipping is less expected than in the U.S.; a little extra is welcome for good service.
Do I need a passport to get off the ship in Crete?
Bring your passport to Crete: Greece is in the Schengen area, and the EU says a non-EU visitor's passport should be valid for at least 3 months after leaving the EU and issued in the last 10 years. If you ever have to fly home, U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires a passport book or another accepted air-travel document. The EU's Entry/Exit System applies to US and UK visitors, so follow your cruise line's instructions; ETIAS isn't running yet.
Safety & connectivity
Is Heraklion safe for cruise passengers?
Heraklion is in Greece, which the US State Department rates Level 1, 'Exercise Normal Precautions', its lowest advisory level.
Is there Wi-Fi at the Heraklion cruise port?
Yes, the passenger terminal at the Heraklion cruise port has Wi-Fi. For mobile data, the EU's 'roam like at home' rules only cover phones from EU countries, so check your own carrier's rates for Greece before you switch off airplane mode.
