Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Tortola?

Cruise ships in Tortola dock at the single cruise pier in Road Town, the island's capital, which ends at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park shopping area. The BVI Ports Authority says the pier takes two ships of up to 180,000 gross tons at once. Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney and Celebrity are the lines that usually call, and with only one pier they all land in the same place, even on busy days when a third or fourth ship tenders in.

Is Tortola a tender port?

Tortola is mainly a docking port: the Road Town pier berths two ships at a time, but on busier days up to two more anchor in the harbor and tender passengers in. The BVI Ports Authority says tenders land at a tender pier right next to the cruise pier, so you come ashore at the same spot as docked ships. The Oasis-class ships are too big for the pier.

Can you walk around Road Town from the Tortola cruise port?

Yes. Road Town is about a 10โ€“15 minute walk from the Tortola cruise pier, on flat streets along Waterfront Drive to Main Street. Within that walk are Pier Park's shops, the free Virgin Islands Folk Museum on Main Street and the Old Government House Museum, which the BVI Tourist Board lists at $5 for visitors. The stroll map has six stops with walking times.

What is there to do at the Tortola cruise port?

Yes, even without a tour: the Tortola cruise pier ends at Pier Park, an open-air shopping area with more than 70 shops, cafรฉs and craft stalls and free Wi-Fi, and Road Town is a 10โ€“15 minute walk beyond it. In town, the Virgin Islands Folk Museum is free and Old Government House costs $5. For a beach you'll need a taxi: Cane Garden Bay is about 15โ€“20 minutes away. See the stroll map for what's within walking distance.

Beaches & islands

Can you walk to a beach from the Tortola cruise port?

No, you can't walk to a beach from the Tortola cruise port; Princess Cruises says none of the island's beaches is walkable from the pier. The closest of the well-known ones, Cane Garden Bay, is about 15โ€“20 minutes by taxi over the hill, and Brewers Bay and Smuggler's Cove are about 30โ€“40 minutes. Taxis wait just outside Pier Park and charge fixed, per-person fares in cash; agree the price before you set off.

How do I get to Cane Garden Bay from the cruise port?

Take a taxi: Cane Garden Bay is about 15โ€“20 minutes from the Tortola cruise pier over the mountain road, and it's too far to walk. Taxis line up just outside Pier Park. Fares are fixed and set per person rather than metered, drivers generally want US cash, and it's worth agreeing the price, and a pickup time for the return, before you leave.

How far is Smuggler's Cove from the Tortola cruise port?

Smuggler's Cove is about 30โ€“40 minutes from the Tortola cruise pier by taxi; Brewers Bay is a similar trip. That makes it a half-day outing once you add beach time and the ride back. Taxis charge fixed per-person fares in cash. Cruise lines don't wait for passengers who are late on their own plans, so leave a cushion before all-aboard.

Can I get to The Baths on Virgin Gorda from the Tortola cruise port?

The Baths are on Virgin Gorda, about 30 minutes from Road Town by boat, so a visit from the Tortola cruise port means a boat trip each way; Princess Cruises lists it as an excursion-only stop. Ferries to the other islands leave from the Road Town ferry terminal, about a 12-minute walk from the pier, but the ship won't wait if a ferry runs late, so a ship's tour is the safer way on a port day.

Getting around

How much are taxis from the Tortola cruise port?

Taxis at the Tortola cruise port charge fixed, government-posted fares rather than metered ones, priced per person. They wait just outside Pier Park, and drivers generally want cash in US dollars, which is the local currency. Agree the fare (and whether it covers the return) before you get in. Celebrity Cruises notes that taxi drivers, especially those who double as guides, expect a tip.

Can I rent a car at the Tortola cruise port?

Yes. Car rental desks, including Avis, operate inside Pier Park at the foot of the Tortola cruise pier. Before you book, know that traffic in the British Virgin Islands drives on the left, even though, as the UK Foreign Office notes, most cars are left-hand drive.

Is Tortola on the same time as my ship?

Tortola runs on Atlantic Standard Time all year with no daylight saving, so from March to November it matches US Eastern time and in winter it's an hour ahead. Your ship may keep a different time, so check which clock all-aboard is given in. Norwegian ships often stay only from 6:00am to 2:00pm, and the ship won't wait for passengers late from their own plans.

Money, documents & safety

What currency is used in Tortola?

Tortola uses the US dollar: it's the official currency of the British Virgin Islands, so there's nothing to exchange and no British pounds needed. Cards are widely accepted at the shops and restaurants near the pier, but taxis generally want cash. Celebrity Cruises says 10โ€“20% is the normal restaurant tip.

Do I need a passport for Tortola on a cruise?

If you're a US citizen on a cruise that starts and ends in the same US port, US Customs and Border Protection lets you return with a birth certificate and government photo ID, though it warns the countries you visit may still ask for a passport. If you miss the ship in Tortola and have to fly home, you'll need a passport book, so bringing one is the safer choice.

Is Tortola safe for cruise passengers?

Yes, Tortola is generally safe: the US State Department rates the British Virgin Islands Level 1, its lowest, and calls them generally a safe destination for travelers. The UK Foreign Office says crime levels in the BVI are low. The main risk the State Department flags is hurricanes, which hit the islands regularly.

Is there free Wi-Fi at the Tortola cruise port?

Yes. Pier Park, the shopping area at the foot of the Tortola cruise pier, offers free Wi-Fi once you register an email address. It's a few steps from the ship, so you can get online without going into town.
