Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Stockholm?

Cruise ships in Stockholm use several quays, and Visit Stockholm names two Stockholm Cruise Center passenger terminals: Stadsgården 165/167 on Södermalm, in the same building as the Fotografiska museum, and Frihamnen 638 in the northeast. Ports of Stockholm lists Stadsgården, Skeppsbron and Frihamnen as the quays favoured by international cruise ships, and only smaller ships fit at Skeppsbron beside the Royal Palace. Your ship's daily program tells you which one you get. Our stroll map starts at Stadsgården.

Where do Celebrity and Royal Caribbean ships dock in Stockholm?

No source we found assigns Celebrity, Royal Caribbean or any other line to a fixed Stockholm quay. Ports of Stockholm says Stadsgården, Skeppsbron and Frihamnen are the quays favoured by international cruise ships, and only smaller ships fit at Skeppsbron. Confirm your own berth in your ship's daily program, because it decides whether the Old Town is a short walk or a bus or taxi ride away.

Is Stockholm walkable from the cruise port?

Yes from Skeppsbron and Stadsgården, no from Frihamnen. Visit Stockholm lists the Old Town as about a 10 minute walk from Stadsgården berth 160 and about 20 minutes from berths 165/167, and Skeppsbron sits beside the Royal Palace. Frihamnen is about 3 km from the city, a 10 minute taxi ride or a 20 minute bus ride. Our stroll map shows six stops within about 20 minutes of the Stadsgården terminal.

How do I get from the Stockholm cruise port to the city centre?

From Stadsgården you can walk to the Old Town in 10 to 20 minutes, and from Frihamnen Visit Stockholm lists about a 10 minute taxi ride or a 20 minute bus ride for the 3 km into the city. An SL single ticket costs SEK 43 for an adult and is valid for 75 minutes on all SL services; you can pay by tapping a Visa, Mastercard or American Express contactless card, but not with cash on board.

How do I get from Nynäshamn cruise port to Stockholm?

Nynäshamn is a separate port about 60 km south of Stockholm, so it's a transfer rather than a walk. Seabourn says buses and commuter trains leave every 30 minutes and take about an hour to reach the city, and a port guide also gives about an hour by commuter train to Stockholm Central Station. Allow that hour each way when you plan how much of the day you have.

Is there anything to do at the Stockholm cruise port?

Yes if your ship uses Stadsgården: the Old Town is a 10 to 20 minute walk, and the terminal shares a building with Fotografiska, a photography museum open daily from 10:00 to 23:00. Visit Stockholm says both Stockholm Cruise Center terminals have toilets, souvenir shops and cafés, so Frihamnen has the basics too, but it is a bus or taxi ride from the sights. See our stroll map for what's within a short walk.

Beaches & water

Can you walk to a beach from the Stockholm cruise port?

No, there is no public swimming spot within a realistic walk of the Stockholm cruise berths. The nearest bathing places mapped in OpenStreetMap are on Långholmen, such as Långholmens klippbad, about 1.8 miles from the Stadsgården terminal and about 1.4 miles from Skeppsbron. A boat tour on the water is the easier way to be out by the shore.

Getting around

How do taxis work in Stockholm?

Taxi fares in Sweden aren't regulated, so each company sets its own, according to the Swedish Transport Agency. Every taxi must show a comparison price for a typical 10 km, 15 minute trip in black numbers on a yellow label, and taxis have yellow number plates. If that comparison price is higher than SEK 700 you are entitled to information on the maximum amount payable, so check the label before you get in.

What boat tours leave from the centre of Stockholm?

Three boat tours start on the central waterfront: a 105 minute classic wooden boat cruise next to the Gustav III statue at Skeppsbron 2 beside the Royal Palace, a 2 hour guided cruise to Fjäderholmarna that also starts at Skeppsbron, and a Strömma archipelago cruise of 1.5, 2.5 or 3 hours from Strandvägen berth 15 or 16. Pick a sailing that's back well before all-aboard. See our Pro Picks.

Time ashore

Is 2 hours enough to see Stockholm from the cruise port?

Two hours is enough to see the Old Town if your ship is at Skeppsbron or Stadsgården, since the Old Town is about 10 to 20 minutes' walk from Stadsgården. Listings of about two hours or less include a 105 minute classic wooden boat cruise from Skeppsbron, a one hour amphibious bus tour from near the Royal Opera and a one hour Royal Palace tour meeting at Slottsbacken. See our 2-hour picks.

Can I fit an archipelago day trip into a cruise stop in Stockholm?

Yes, but only if your ship is in port from early morning to mid-afternoon. A guided 7 hour Vaxholm day trip meets at the National Museum at 9:45 for a 10:00 steamship departure, with lunch or fika at a waterside café, and a guided kayak tour is listed as 4 to 8 hours. Ask your ship for its all-aboard time before booking either. See our 7-hour picks.

Before you go

Do I need Swedish kronor in Stockholm, or can I use cards?

Cards cover almost everything in Stockholm, but the currency is the Swedish krona, not the euro. Visit Sweden says the country is one of the most cashless in the world, that many shops, restaurants and museums prefer or only accept card or mobile payments, and that euros and other foreign currencies are generally not accepted in cash. Carrying a lot of cash isn't necessary.

Do I need a passport for Sweden on a cruise?

Bring your passport. US Customs and Border Protection says the closed-loop cruise exception (a birth certificate and photo ID) covers US re-entry only and that you may still be required to show a passport to enter the countries the ship visits, and the Swedish Migration Agency says visitors who need no visa must hold a passport valid for at least three months after they leave the Schengen area. Check your cruise line's own document rules too.

Is Stockholm safe, and can I drink the tap water?

The US State Department rates Sweden Level 2, exercise increased caution, due to terrorism, and says attacks can target tourist locations, transport hubs, markets and restaurants. The advisory was last updated on 2026-05-17. Stockholm's water utility says the city's drinking water comes from Lake Mälaren, is treated for about twelve hours and is sampled at least 1,000 times a year from the network.
