Getting ashore
Where do cruise ships dock in Invergordon?
Cruise ships dock alongside at the Port of Cromarty Firth, and in 2026 the port says ships arrive at Berths 2 to 4; there are no tenders. Every line uses the same berth group, from Princess, Holland America, Norwegian and MSC to AIDA, Cunard and Oceania, and the timetable assigns none to a particular berth. A few calls use Quay West, so confirm your berth in the ship's daily program.
Is there a cruise terminal at Invergordon?
Invergordon has no cruise terminal building that the Port of Cromarty Firth describes: you walk off the ship onto a working port. Passengers on ship-booked tours exit into the coach parking opposite the main gate, and everyone else walks out via West Harbour. The Invergordon Tourism Alliance has a cabin on the quayside with printed maps of the town and the mural trail.
Can I walk from the cruise port into Invergordon?
Yes. The Port of Cromarty Firth says the town centre is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the port, and the High Street's first murals are about 0.1 miles from the port office. The whole mural trail runs about half a mile along the High Street, and the stroll map shows everything within reach on foot.
Is there anything to do in Invergordon cruise port?
Yes, but most people head inland. In town, the port points visitors to the mural trail, which has eleven murals, a free guided-tour app, and the Invergordon Museum, all within the 5 to 10 minute walk to the High Street. The port describes Invergordon as the starting point for Highland castles, lochs and glens, which is where the shore excursions go.
Why do cruise ships go to Invergordon?
Cruise ships call at Invergordon because the Port of Cromarty Firth describes it as the starting point for Highland shore excursions to castles, lochs, glens and historic towns. The popular day trips are listed at 7 to 8 hours and cover Cawdor Castle, Culloden and Loch Ness.
Beaches & water
Can you walk to a beach from the Invergordon cruise port?
No. There is no swimming beach within walking distance of the Invergordon berths: OpenStreetMap maps none within about a mile, and the waterfront beside the port is working harbour. The nearest water most cruisers see is Loch Ness, which the Highlands tours stop at for photos.
Getting around
How do I get from Invergordon cruise port to Inverness?
The Stagecoach 925 public bus to Inverness leaves from the Port of Cromarty Firth's Facilities Office car park on cruise days, and the port's town map shows other bus and rail connections. We could not confirm the fare or timetable, so check Stagecoach before you rely on it. Most independent coach tours leave between 8.30 and 9.30 am and are back between 4.10 and 5 pm.
Shore excursions & time
What are the best shore excursions from Invergordon?
The most popular shore excursions from Invergordon are full-day Highlands tours that combine Cawdor Castle, Culloden Battlefield, Inverness and Loch Ness, listed at 7 to 8 hours. Our picks include a whisky tasting option and a small-group minibus, and there is also a short walking tour of the town's murals and a half-day country house visit.
Will a Loch Ness tour get me back to the ship in time?
Tours sold for cruise passengers plan to get you back, and one operator says it returns passengers around an hour before the ship sails. The port says most independent coaches return between 4.10 and 5 pm, and morning tour coaches arranged by the cruise line drive back along the High Street. Your ship's all-aboard time is the deadline, so check it against the tour's return time before you book.
Money & documents
What currency do I need in Invergordon?
Invergordon uses the pound sterling (£), the same as the rest of the UK, so bring pounds or a card rather than US dollars. Edinburgh's official visitor site says Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards, American Express may not be accepted by every retailer, and most ATMs are free though some charge a small fee.
Do you tip in Scotland?
Tipping in Scotland is a gesture rather than an obligation. Edinburgh's official visitor site suggests 10 to 15 percent of the final bill at a restaurant and describes tipping as a kind gesture, so it is optional.
Do I need a passport for a cruise stop in Invergordon?
On a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends at the same US port, US Customs and Border Protection says US citizens can re-enter with a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. It adds that you may still need a passport for the countries your ship visits, so confirm with your cruise line, and bring one anyway in case you have to fly home.
What time is it in Invergordon compared to ship time?
Invergordon keeps UK time: British Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer, and Greenwich Mean Time (UTC+0) once the clocks go back, which GOV.UK says happens on 25 October in 2026 and 31 October in 2027. Ships normally run on port time, but your daily program gives the all-aboard time, which is the one that matters.
Safety
Is Invergordon safe for cruise passengers?
The US State Department rates the United Kingdom Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, because of terrorism risk. The advisory covers the whole country; we found no separate warning for Invergordon.
