Getting ashore
Where do cruise ships dock in St. Kitts?
Cruise ships in St. Kitts dock at Port Zante, a cruise-only port on Basseterre's waterfront with two piers, Pier I and Pier II, so Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and Carnival passengers all come ashore in the same place. The port's schedule doesn't say which pier a given ship uses, so check your ship's daily program. On very busy days a ship may use the Deep Water Harbour east of the city or anchor offshore instead.
Is St. Kitts a tender port?
Usually not: ships normally tie up at Port Zante's piers in Basseterre and passengers walk off. On very busy days a ship may be sent to the Deep Water Harbour east of the city or anchor offshore, and your ship's instructions will tell you how to get ashore if that happens.
Is there anything to do at the St. Kitts cruise port, or should I get off the ship?
Yes for most people: Port Zante opens straight onto downtown Basseterre, with Independence Square, the Circus and the public market all within about 500 metres of the port entrance. The port also has shops, restaurants and bars if you'd rather stay put. There's no beach within walking range, and the stroll map shows what is.
Is Basseterre walkable from the cruise port?
Yes: Port Zante opens directly onto downtown Basseterre, and Independence Square is about 0.2 miles from the pier, roughly a 6-minute walk. The port says the square, the Circus with its clock tower and the public market are all within about 500 metres of the entrance, and Bay Road and Fort Street are about five minutes away. Ships at the outer pier positions face a longer walk.
What shops and restaurants are at Port Zante?
Port Zante has retail and duty-free shops, restaurants and bars, and light refreshments, along with restrooms and seating. The port lists restaurant meals at US$12 to US$30 a person including a drink. Its guide doesn't mention Wi-Fi, so don't count on it, and note that ATMs are in town rather than at the pier.
How do taxis work at the St. Kitts cruise port, and what do they cost?
Taxis wait in a dispatch and tour zone directly outside the Port Zante terminal. The government sets maximum fares by area and by tour, quoted in both US and EC dollars, with an extra US$20 charge between 11pm and 5am. Agree the total fare, the currency, the stops and the return time before you leave.
How do I get to Nevis from the St. Kitts cruise port?
Passenger ferries to Charlestown, Nevis leave from the ferry terminal on Basseterre's waterfront, a short walk from Port Zante, and the crossing takes about 45 minutes. Frequency varies, so check the return sailing against your all-aboard time: the cruise line won't wait for guests on their own plans.
Can you book St. Kitts excursions without the ship, and where do they meet?
Yes: many St. Kitts tours are bookable on their own and meet right at the terminal, outside the MaPau Casino next to the exit or at the Port Zante Marina security gate, a 2 to 5 minute walk away, and several ask you to arrive 30 minutes early. Read each meeting point before you book, and keep a margin, because the cruise line won't wait for guests on their own plans.
Beaches & water
Can you walk to a beach from the St. Kitts cruise port?
No: there's no swimming beach within walking distance of Port Zante. South Friars Bay is about 6 to 8 km (3.7 to 5 miles) away and Cockleshell Bay about 16 km (10 miles), and both need a taxi or an organised transfer. The Nevis beach-day tour in the favorites above is one way to get beach time without arranging transport yourself.
Time & timing
What can you fit into a St. Kitts port day?
With a 3-hour window you can walk the town around Independence Square, which is about 0.2 miles from the pier, or take a short tour that meets at the terminal. Longer plans, half-day sails or a tour of the island, need a margin before the ship sails: on the October 2026 schedule ships arrive at 7 or 8am and sail between 4 and 7pm. Your ship's all-aboard time comes earlier than its sailing time.
How early do I need to be back on the ship in St. Kitts?
Be back on board by the all-aboard time in your ship's daily program, which comes before the ship's scheduled sailing: on Port Zante's October 2026 schedule ships sail between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. St. Kitts is on Atlantic Standard Time all year with no daylight saving. Cruise lines don't wait for guests on their own plans, so leave a margin for ferries and island tours.
Money & safety
Do I need EC dollars in St. Kitts, and are there ATMs near the port?
Not necessarily: both US dollars and Eastern Caribbean dollars (EC$) are accepted in St. Kitts, at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 to US$1.00, so small US bills cover taxis and small purchases. ATMs are in Basseterre, with several banks 5 to 10 minutes' walk from the port, and they dispense EC$ with some offering US$.
Do I need a passport for St. Kitts on a closed-loop cruise?
On a closed-loop cruise, US citizens can re-enter the US with a birth certificate plus government photo ID, but US Customs and Border Protection warns that the countries you visit may still ask for a passport, so bring one. If you miss the ship and have to fly home from St. Kitts, a passport book is required under the air travel rules.
Is St. Kitts safe for cruise passengers?
Generally yes: the US State Department rates Saint Kitts and Nevis Level 1, "Exercise normal precautions", and calls it generally a safe destination for travelers. It notes the islands regularly experience hurricanes.
