Getting ashore
Where do cruise ships dock in Maui?
Ships dock at Kahului Harbor on Maui's north shore, at Pier 1, a working commercial pier shared with cargo ships, so there's no tendering. Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Oceania and Norwegian's Pride of America are the lines on Kahului's October 2026 schedule, while Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships have called at Lahaina, where passengers tender ashore. Lines and berths move, and a Maui call can be cancelled when the dock is full or the ship is too big, so check your own itinerary.
Is there anything to do near the Kahului cruise port?
Not much at the dock itself: Kahului Harbor is a working commercial harbor beside the airport, and passengers are processed in only part of the Pier 1 shed. What makes a Maui day worth it is a tour, a rental car or a helicopter flight. The nearest things on foot are Maui Mall, about 1.5 miles by the walking route, and Kanaha Beach Park, about 3 miles on foot, so most people leave the dock by shuttle, taxi or tour. See the 2, 4 and 7-hour plans.
Can I walk from the Maui cruise port to Kahului town?
Not really. Kahului's main shopping hub, Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, is about 3 miles on foot, and the path out of the harbor is roundabout. Maui Mall, with a Whole Foods, a Longs Drugs and a cinema, is the nearest stop at about 1.5 miles, and nothing between the pier and the malls is aimed at visitors. Most cruisers take a taxi, a rental-car shuttle or a tour instead.
What is close to the cruise port in Maui?
ʻĪao Valley State Monument is the closest big sight, about a 20-minute drive away; visitors from outside Hawaii need a reservation and pay $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle. The airport's rental-car offices are only a few minutes away, and Maui Mall is the nearest thing on foot at about 1.5 miles.
Beaches & water
Is there a beach near the Kahului cruise port?
There's no beach at the dock. The closest is Kanaha Beach Park, about 1.5 miles away in a straight line and about 3 miles on foot around the harbor and airport. It's known for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and the state lists its lifeguard station as staffed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Most people get there by taxi or rental car.
Getting around
Is there a car rental at the Maui cruise port?
Not at the dock, but rental companies near Kahului Airport run free shuttles to collect cruise passengers, and the airport is about a five-minute ride away. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National, Sixt and Thrifty are among the companies with airport offices. Shuttle times aren't published, so confirm with your rental company before you sail; one guide found a taxi quicker on a busy day.
How do I get around from the Maui cruise port without a rental car?
Taxis and tour buses wait in the lot beside the cruise shed, but no source publishes fares, so agree on a price before you get in. The Maui Bus costs $2 a ride or $4 for a day pass, but it doesn't run to the pier and one guide calls it slow for a cruise day; its hub is the Kahului Transit Center, which replaced the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center stop in November 2024. For the island's big sights, a tour or a rental car is the practical choice.
Where can I park a rental car overnight near the Kahului cruise port?
Parking near the pier is limited. Cruise Critic describes a small free lot across from the tour-bus pickup that fills up if you get back late, and the Maui Mall lot as another option, and a local guide warns that cars parked outside designated areas get towed. It matters most on overnight calls such as Norwegian's Pride of America, which arrives about 8:00 a.m. and leaves about 6:00 p.m. the next day.
Time ashore & excursions
How long do I have in Maui, and what fits in 2, 4 or 7 hours?
On the October 2026 schedule, day calls arrived between about 7 and 10 a.m. and left between about 5 and 9 p.m., so most are nine to eleven hours; Pride of America stays overnight. Two hours fits a helicopter flight from the Kahului Heliport, four hours fits a snorkel boat from the island's south side, and seven hours fits a shortened Road to Hāna day. Add the drive each way and be back by your ship's all-aboard time, which is before sailing.
Can I do the Road to Hana on a cruise day in Maui?
It's possible but tight on a day call. The Road to Hāna is about 52 miles from Kahului, and Hawaii's tourism board says the drive can take two to four hours, with 620 curves and 59 bridges. One Cruise Critic traveler waited for a fallen tree to be cleared and was glad it was an overnight call. A shortened halfway-to-Hāna tour is the safer fit for a day call.
Can I see the Haleakala sunrise from a cruise ship stop in Maui?
Not on a typical day call. The summit sunrise needs an advance reservation through Recreation.gov, and the sunrise window is before 7:00 a.m., which is the earliest any ship on Kahului's October 2026 schedule arrived. Park entry itself costs $30 per vehicle (valid three days) or $15 per person on foot or bicycle.
Before you go
What time zone is Maui, and does it change for daylight saving?
Maui is on Hawaii Standard Time, UTC-10, all year; Hawaii doesn't change its clocks for daylight saving. That puts it two hours behind the Pacific coast in winter and three hours behind in summer. Your ship may keep its own time, so go by the all-aboard time on your daily schedule.
Do I need a passport for a Hawaii cruise stop in Maui?
Hawaii is part of the United States, so U.S. citizens need no passport to visit Maui itself. Whether you need one for the cruise depends on the itinerary: Princess says some Hawaii sailings include Mexico or Canada, which do need one, and Norwegian says an extended South Pacific cruise may need one. Check the itinerary your cruise line gave you.
Do I need cash in Maui, and where are the ATMs?
Maui is in the United States, so everything is priced in U.S. dollars. Cruise Critic says banks and ATMs near the Kahului port are at Maui Mall and its Longs Drugs rather than at the dock.
Is there a sunscreen rule in Maui?
Hawaii law bans selling sunscreen that contains oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription, because the chemicals harm coral. It covers sales in the state rather than what a visitor brings, so check the label if you buy sunscreen on the island.
