Getting ashore
Do cruise ships dock or tender in Santorini, Greece?
Cruise ships tender in Santorini: there is no cruise pier, so ships anchor in the caldera and small boats carry you ashore. Celebrity and Princess say passengers usually land at the Old Port, also called Skala, below Fira, while some ship excursions land at Athinios, the ferry port, where coaches wait. The Old Port has no road, so you go up to Fira by cable car, steps or donkey. Your ship's daily program says which landing you get.
Which port does Celebrity, Princess or Virgin Voyages use in Santorini?
Celebrity and Princess say their ships tender passengers to Skala, the Old Port below Fira, and Virgin Voyages sends guests who aren't on its excursions there too. Celebrity and Virgin Voyages also tender excursion groups to Athinios, the ferry port. In 2026 the Municipal Port Fund of Thira set a limit of 30% of a ship's passengers at Athinios, so the Old Port takes the larger share. Other lines' landings weren't confirmed, so check your daily program.
Is it worth getting off the ship in Santorini?
Yes, if you plan for the climb: the Old Port is a small waterfront with a few cafés and seafood snack bars, and Fira sits on the cliff about 220 metres above it, with several museums and two cathedrals within about 0.3 miles of the top cable car station. The cable car costs €10 each way, and lines can be very long in peak season. Boat tours that start beside the cable car station skip the climb: see the 5-hour plans.
Can I walk from the Santorini cruise port to Fira?
Not easily: Fira sits on the cliff about 220 metres above the Old Port, so the choice is a 3 to 5 minute cable car ride or a climb of about 600 steps that takes roughly 25 to 40 minutes, with no shade. Athinios, where some excursions land, is about 5 miles from Fira by road, so it is a bus ride, not a walk. A wall collapse closed the steps for about a week in late July 2026 before the Mayor of Thira reopened them on 3 August.
How much does the Santorini cable car cost, and how long is the wait?
The Santorini cable car costs €10 one way for adults and €5 for children, according to the operator's price list, and it runs from 7:00 to 22:00 in September and October (to 23:00 from June to August). The ride takes 3 to 5 minutes, but Celebrity warns of very long lines in peak season, in both directions, and waits of well over two hours at the worst times. The free alternative is the path of about 600 steps.
Is Athinios the cruise port in Santorini?
No: Athinios is Santorini's main ferry port, not a cruise pier, but some ship excursions tender passengers there because coaches can reach it. Celebrity and Virgin Voyages both describe excursion landings at Athinios. It is about 5 miles by road from Fira, and KTEL Santorini's price list shows a bus from Fira at €2.70, about 20 minutes. Passengers who aren't on an excursion usually land at the Old Port instead.
How many cruise passengers can visit Santorini in one day?
Santorini's port authority caps cruise passengers at 8,000 on the same day in both 2025 and 2026, counting each ship at full capacity in 2026. The Municipal Port Fund of Thira, which sets the rule, also decided in 2026 that up to 70% of a ship's tendered passengers land at the Old Port and no more than 30% at Athinios. Trade press reports describe that split as enforced again after the stairs reopened in August.
Beaches & water
Can you walk to a beach from the Santorini cruise port?
No: neither landing is within walking distance of a beach. The nearest popular ones are the black-sand beaches at Kamari and Perissa, which you reach by KTEL bus from Fira's bus station, where KTEL Santorini's price list shows €2.20 to Kamari and €2.70 to Perissa and Perivolos one way. From the Old Port that means the cable car up first, so a beach trip takes most of a port day; check the last bus back.
Getting around
How do I get from the Santorini cruise port to Oia, and what does a taxi cost?
The cheapest way from the Santorini cruise port to Oia is the KTEL bus from Fira's bus station, which costs €2.20 one way according to KTEL Santorini, after the cable car up from the Old Port. Guides say buses run about every 30 minutes in peak season. Taxis are few, queues can be long when ships unload, and there is no Uber or Lyft. No official taxi fare table was found, so agree a price before you set off.
Can you explore Santorini on your own from a cruise ship?
Yes: passengers who aren't on a ship excursion usually land at the Old Port, take the cable car up to Fira, and can reach Oia, Kamari or Perissa by KTEL bus for €2.20 to €2.70 one way. The catch is time, because the cable car and bus legs both add queues. The volcano boat and the small-group shore excursion meet beside the cable car station at the Old Port, so they skip the climb. Leave a margin for the line back down before all-aboard.
Time & money
How much time do I need for a Santorini excursion?
Santorini excursions run from a 1 to 2 hour wine museum visit and a 3-hour volcano boat tour to 3 to 6 hour island tours and day trips of 7 hours or more, before the tender and the cable car. The volcano boat starts at the Old Port, the island tour for cruise travelers at the cable car's top station, and the Athinios volcano cruise at Athinios Gate 5. Princess says tender timetables can change when ships share them. See the 7-hour plans.
What time is it in Santorini, and is it ship time or local time?
Santorini is on Eastern European Time, UTC+2, and switches to UTC+3 summer time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October; in 2026 clocks go back on 25 October. Many ships keep their home-port clock and give all-aboard times in ship time, so check which clock yours uses. Royal Caribbean says the ship will not wait for any guest faring on their own.
What currency do I need in Santorini, and can I use US dollars?
Santorini uses the euro, and shops and restaurants in Greece take euros only, not US dollars. Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely accepted in tourist areas, but card machines at small places sometimes don't work, so carry some euros in case.
Safety & documents
Is Santorini safe for cruise passengers?
Yes: the US State Department rates Greece Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, and calls it generally safe for travelers. It adds that petty crime is common in popular tourist locations and that large demonstrations can happen at short notice and disrupt transportation, so keep valuables close in crowds and leave extra time to get back to the ship.
Do I need a passport for Santorini on a cruise?
Bring your passport: US Customs and Border Protection says US citizens on a closed-loop cruise can re-enter the US with a birth certificate and photo ID, but warns that the countries you visit may still require a passport. For Greece, in the Schengen area, a visitor's passport should be valid for at least 3 months after leaving. If you have to fly home from Greece, for example after missing the ship, you need a passport book.
