Getting ashore
Does Grand Cayman have a dock for cruise ships, or is it a tender port?
Grand Cayman is a tender port: there is no cruise dock, so ships anchor off George Town and small boats carry you ashore. Tenders land at one of three terminals, Royal Watler, North or South, which sit within a short walk of each other on the downtown waterfront. The ride usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. Voters rejected a proposed cruise pier in an April 2025 referendum, so tendering is how it works for now.
Which terminal does Carnival or Royal Caribbean use in Grand Cayman?
No cruise line has its own terminal in Grand Cayman: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, MSC, Princess, Celebrity and Holland America all tender to the same three George Town terminals, and the terminal is assigned for the day. Most ships usually land at Royal Watler, the largest, with North and South taking the overflow. Your ship's daily program or app will say which one, and the tender back leaves from the terminal you arrived at. The three are about 0.1 miles apart.
How long does the tender take in Grand Cayman?
The tender ride in Grand Cayman usually takes 10 to 15 minutes on the water, but the whole process takes longer once you add the queue on the ship. One guide suggests allowing at least 45 minutes each way and boarding a return tender at least an hour before departure. That matters most if you've booked your own tour: Royal Caribbean, for one, says the ship will not wait for guests touring on their own.
Can you walk around Grand Cayman from the cruise port?
Yes. Grand Cayman's tender terminals are in downtown George Town, so you walk straight off the tender into town. Heroes Square, the central square, is about 0.1 miles from the Royal Watler terminal, roughly 4 minutes on foot, and the North and South terminals are just as close. Traffic drives on the left, so look right first when you cross. The stroll map shows six stops within reach.
Is it worth getting off the ship in Grand Cayman?
Yes for most people, because the tender drops you in the middle of George Town and you don't need an excursion to fill a few hours. Royal Watler terminal has a duty-free shop, souvenir stalls, a bar and tour booths, and shops and restaurants surround all three terminals. For free, Heroes Square is about 4 minutes away, the Wreck of the Cali is a shore snorkel about 5 minutes north, and Pageant Beach is an 18-minute walk. Short tours also leave from the terminal itself: see the 3-hour plans.
Beaches & water
Is there a beach near the Grand Cayman cruise port?
The nearest beach to the Grand Cayman cruise port is Pageant Beach, about 0.8 miles north of the Royal Watler terminal, an 18-minute walk along North Church Street. It's small, has restrooms and little else, and isn't rated a good swimming beach. There's no beach at the tender terminals themselves. For a proper beach day most people go to Seven Mile Beach, about 2.8 miles north and roughly a 10-minute drive. Pageant Beach is on the stroll map.
How do I get to Seven Mile Beach from the Grand Cayman cruise port?
Seven Mile Beach is about 2.8 miles north of the Grand Cayman cruise port, roughly a 10-minute drive, so most people take a taxi or the public bus rather than walk for an hour. Taxis wait at the stand at the ship dock. Buses on routes 1 and 2 leave from the depot beside Heroes Square, about 5 minutes' walk from the terminals, and can be flagged down along the road. The fare is a few dollars, and the tourism board says buses take US and Cayman dollars.
How long does a Stingray City excursion take from the Grand Cayman cruise port?
A Stingray City excursion from the Grand Cayman cruise port takes about 2.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the boat. The shortest trip we list spends 2.5 hours on the water plus the transfer and meets at the Waterfront Centre, a few minutes' walk from the Royal Watler terminal. A catamaran that adds Starfish Point and a reef stop runs 3.5 hours. Add the tender each way before you pick a start time. The options are in the 5-hour plans.
Getting around
How much is a taxi from the Grand Cayman cruise port?
Taxi fares from the Grand Cayman cruise port follow a national fare schedule, and the Cayman government's free CI:GO app will quote your trip before you get in. Enter the pickup, drop-off, passengers and luggage and it shows the fare in both Cayman and US dollars. Taxis wait at the stand at the ship dock in George Town. We don't print fares here because no current official figure for the run to Seven Mile Beach is published outside the app.
Money, documents & time
How much is $1 US in the Cayman Islands, and do they take US dollars?
One US dollar is worth about 83 Cayman cents: the Cayman Islands dollar is pegged at CI$1 to US$1.20. You can pay in US dollars on a port day, because the Cayman tourism board says US currency is used interchangeably with Cayman dollars. Most shops, restaurants and bars also take major credit cards. Some vendors convert at a worse rate than the official one, and market stalls may want cash.
Do I need a passport to cruise to Grand Cayman?
US citizens on a closed-loop cruise to Grand Cayman can re-enter the United States with a birth certificate and government photo ID, according to US Customs and Border Protection. CBP also warns that the countries your ship visits may still ask for a passport, and the Cayman tourism board says visitors entering from another country need one. If you miss the ship and have to fly home, you'll need a passport, so bringing one is the safer choice.
What time zone is Grand Cayman on, and does it match ship time?
Grand Cayman is on Eastern Standard Time (UTCโ5) all year and doesn't change its clocks. A ship keeping Florida time is one hour ahead of the island from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, and the same in winter. A ship on Texas time matches Grand Cayman in summer and is one hour behind in winter. Check which clock a tour's start time uses before you book.
Safety & practical
Is Grand Cayman safe for cruise passengers?
Grand Cayman is rated Level 1, exercise normal precautions, by the US State Department, in an advisory issued in May 2026 that calls the Cayman Islands generally a safe destination for travelers. The UK government's travel advice likewise says crime rates are low, while suggesting sensible care with your belongings. One thing to remember on foot or on a rented bike: traffic drives on the left.
Can you drink the tap water in Grand Cayman?
Yes, tap water in Grand Cayman is safe to drink. The piped supply is desalinated, and both the government's Water Authority and Cayman Water, the utility for Seven Mile Beach and West Bay, say their water meets World Health Organization drinking-water standards. So a refillable bottle is fine for a day ashore.
Is there Wi-Fi at the Grand Cayman cruise port?
Don't count on Wi-Fi at the Grand Cayman cruise port: sources disagree on whether the Royal Watler terminal offers it. The Cayman tourism board lists public hotspots at coffee shops, post offices and libraries instead, so a cafรฉ in George Town is the surer bet. The local mobile networks are Digicel and Flow, if you're checking roaming with your carrier.
