Six easy stops on foot from the Cruise Ship Terminal, where the tram and tour meeting points are. No beach is in walking range; the nearest is across the channel on Douglas Island. Ships at the AJ Dock are about 0.7 mi from the same streets, or you can take the dock shuttle to the tram.

    Goldbelt Tram

The tram base is next to the dock, at 490 S. Franklin Street. It runs up Mount Roberts to a mountain house; a day ticket was $60 for adults at last check, and hours change with the weather.

  2. Drinks ยท 0.2 mi ยท ~6 min

  4. Landmark ยท 0.5 mi ยท ~12 min

    Alaska State Capitol

The state capitol building, one of the downtown sights Travel Juneau lists within easy reach of the docks. A walking tour also uses it as a stop, so it pairs well with the museums nearby.

  5. Museum ยท 0.5 mi ยท ~12 min

    Juneau-Douglas City Museum

The city's museum, a few minutes past the capitol. It is also on Travel Juneau's list of downtown highlights within walking distance of the docks.

Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Juneau?

Cruise ships in Juneau tie up along the downtown waterfront at the Alaska Steamship Dock, the Cruise Ship Terminal, the South Franklin Street Dock or, a little farther south, the AJ Dock. Travel Juneau says the docks are downtown, so most passengers need no shuttle; ships at the AJ Dock offer one to the Goldbelt Tram. A ship that can't get a berth tenders to South Franklin Street, which is rare. Your dock is set for your call, so confirm it with your cruise line.

Which dock does Carnival, Princess or Norwegian use in Juneau?

No published list ties a cruise line to a Juneau dock, and visitor guides name different docks for the same lines, so check your own sailing. Docks are assigned for each call, and guides say the Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska schedule and Travel Juneau's cruise calendar list the berth for each ship. Whichever you get, the three downtown docks are within about half a mile of Front Street, and the AJ Dock is about 0.7 miles away.

Is it worth getting off the ship in Juneau?

Yes for most people: Juneau's docks open straight onto downtown, so you can walk to the Goldbelt Tram, the Alaska State Capitol and the city and state museums without a shuttle, according to Travel Juneau. Many tours, including whale watching, meet at the tram building. The big sights, Mendenhall Glacier (about 13 miles away) and the whales, need a bus, boat or shuttle, so pick a timed plan if you want more than a walk.

Can you walk around Juneau from the cruise port?

Yes: from the Alaska Steamship Dock and the Cruise Ship Terminal, Front Street and the Red Dog Saloon are 0.2 miles or less, a walk of about three to six minutes. From the South Franklin Street Dock it is about half a mile, around 12 minutes, and from the AJ Dock about 0.7 miles, around 17 minutes, or you can take the dock shuttle to the tram. The stroll map shows what is within 20 minutes.

Can you walk to a beach from the Juneau cruise port?

No: there is no public swimming beach within walking distance of any Juneau cruise dock. The nearest mapped beach, Sandy Beach, is on Douglas Island across Gastineau Channel from downtown, so you reach it by road over the Juneau-Douglas Bridge, not on foot from the ship.

Mendenhall Glacier

How do I get from the Juneau cruise port to Mendenhall Glacier?

The easiest way is a private glacier shuttle or a tour: Capital Transit says the shuttles take about 30 minutes from downtown and can be booked at booths near the terminals, on your ship or in advance. The city bus costs $2 in exact cash, but Routes 3, 4 and 8 stop at Dredge Lake Road, a 1.5-mile walk from the visitor center, and the trip takes up to 1.5 hours each way.

How far is Mendenhall Glacier from the Juneau cruise port?

Mendenhall Glacier is about 13 miles from downtown Juneau, according to Travel Juneau, so it is too far to walk from the ship. A private shuttle takes about 30 minutes each way. The city bus takes up to about 1.5 hours one way, including a 1.5-mile walk from the nearest stop.

Do you have to pay to visit Mendenhall Glacier?

Partly. The U.S. Forest Service charges $5 for a day pass ($15 for a season pass) for visitors 16 and older to use the visitor center, Photo Point Trail and Steep Creek, but the Nugget Falls Trail, 0.8 miles each way, needs no pass. The visitor center is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from May to September and only intermittently in April and October.

Time ashore

What can I do in Juneau for free from a cruise ship?

Walking downtown costs nothing, and Travel Juneau lists the Juneau Sea Walk and the Alaska State Capitol among the sights close to the docks. At Mendenhall Glacier, the Forest Service says the Nugget Falls Trail needs no pass, though you will pay for a shuttle or bus to get there. The stroll map lists stops within a 20-minute walk.

How much time will I have in Juneau and when should I be back on the ship?

Published summer 2027 calls show ships arriving between about 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. and leaving between about 3 p.m. and 11 p.m., so most stops are eight to eleven hours. Juneau runs on Alaska Time, one hour behind Pacific. Your ship's all-aboard time is the deadline, and it is on the ship's own schedule, so plan a half-day tour to end well before it.

How much does the Goldbelt Tram in Juneau cost?

The Goldbelt Tram's website lists a day ticket at $60 for adults and $45 for children 3 to 12. The base is at 490 S. Franklin Street, beside the Cruise Ship Terminal dock. At the top is a mountain house, and a guided outing also uses a beer garden up there. Hours change with the weather on the mountain, so check it is running before you plan around it.

Before you go

Do I need a passport for an Alaska cruise?

On a closed-loop cruise, one that starts and ends at the same U.S. port, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says U.S. citizens can re-enter with a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. CBP adds that you may still need a passport for the countries your ship visits, and your cruise line may require one, so check its rules.

What should I wear in Juneau on a cruise?

Pack a waterproof jacket, not just a water-resistant one, plus layers. Travel Juneau says the city sits in a temperate rainforest, so rain is always possible, and summer highs typically run from the mid-60s to the low 70s ยฐF.

When do cruise ships visit Juneau?

Large cruise ships call at Juneau from April through October: published schedules show a handful of calls in early October 2026 and listings from April 2027. The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, the U.S. Forest Service says, opens only intermittently in April and October, so check what is open before you plan a shoulder-season day.
