Within a stroll of the boat

Five stops within a 10-minute walk of Heritage Quay, where most ships dock. There's no beach on foot; Fort James Beach is a short taxi ride away. Ships at Deep Water Harbour are about a mile from town, so take a taxi from there.

  1. Shops ยท 0.1 mi ยท ~4 min

    Redcliffe Quay

A restored waterfront quay beside the cruise piers, with boutiques, cafes, tropical gardens and art galleries in old stone buildings. It's quieter and more scenic than the duty-free malls next door, though still touristy.

  2. Museum ยท 0.2 mi ยท ~6 min

    Museum of Antigua and Barbuda

A small museum in a courthouse building from 1750, one of the downtown landmarks an easy walk from the dock. Hours vary by source, so treat a visit as a bonus rather than a plan.

  3. Market ยท 0.3 mi ยท ~7 min

    Public Market

The town's public market area on Kentish Road, south of the quays, with the main bus station across the way. The pin is the public meat market; ask in town which stalls are open the day you're there.

  4. Landmark ยท 0.3 mi ยท ~8 min

    St. John's Cathedral

The Anglican cathedral on the hill above downtown, built in 1845. The approach is steep with few curb cuts, so it's a poor choice if anyone in your group finds hills hard.

  5. Landmark ยท 0.4 mi ยท ~10 min

    Government House

The official residence on Cross Street, east of the cathedral. Most visitors see it from the street; a trolley-train tour on GetYourGuide includes a visit inside.

Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Antigua?

Most cruise ships in Antigua dock at Heritage Quay, in the middle of St. John's, and the port also uses the neighbouring Nevis Street pier and Redcliffe Quay. When several ships are in port, some are sent to the Deep Water Harbour terminal, about a mile from town. A few smaller ships anchor at English Harbour on the south coast instead. Your ship's daily program names your berth, and the stroll map starts from Heritage Quay.

Which pier does Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian use in Antigua?

Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Disney, Princess, Celebrity, MSC, Holland America and Virgin Voyages all call at Antigua, and most ships, whatever the line, usually berth at Heritage Quay. No source we found ties a line to a particular pier, and busy days push ships out to the Deep Water Harbour terminal. Your daily program or the cruise line's app shows your berth.

Is it worth getting off the ship in Antigua?

Yes for most people: if your ship is at Heritage Quay you step off into about 50 duty-free shops, restaurants, bars and a casino, and Redcliffe Quay, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and the cathedral are all within about a ten-minute walk. Browsing the quays costs nothing. There's no beach on foot, so the sandy part of the day needs a taxi or a tour.

Can you walk from the cruise port into St. John's, Antigua?

Yes if you dock at Heritage Quay: the town centre is a few minutes' walk, with Redcliffe Quay about 0.1 miles away and the museum, market and cathedral about 0.2 to 0.3 miles. Beyond the pedestrian streets the sidewalks are rough, with deep holes and few curb cuts, and the cathedral sits up a steep hill. From Deep Water Harbour, about a mile out, take a taxi. The stroll map has the walkable stops.

Can you walk to a beach from the Antigua cruise port?

No: there's no beach within walking distance of the Antigua cruise piers. The nearest, Fort James Beach, is about 4 km away by road, roughly a 10-minute taxi ride, and Dickenson Bay is a similar ride of about 10 to 15 minutes. Taxis aren't metered, so agree the price, and whether it's per person or per vehicle, before you set off.

Beaches & excursions

How do you get to Dickenson Bay from the Antigua cruise port?

Take a taxi: Dickenson Bay is about 5 km from the cruise piers, a ride of roughly 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis wait at kiosks just outside the Heritage Quay gate and on Thames Street, and most are vans, so a group pays less per person. Agree the fare, and whether it covers the whole van or each rider, before you get in.

What is the best excursion in Antigua from the cruise port?

Stingray City is the headline excursion from Antigua's cruise port, followed by half-day island tours that combine Shirley Heights, Nelson's Dockyard and a beach. The most-reviewed tours listed for the port are a Stingray City and Long Bay Beach trip, a half-day historical tour with a beach stop and a Stingray City round trip that meets cruise guests outside the port. Prices and meeting points are in the favorites.

How do you get to Stingray City from the Antigua cruise port?

Stingray City is on the island's east side, so it takes a drive and a short boat ride from the port: one listed 4-hour itinerary has about 40 minutes in a van each way and about 80 minutes at the sandbar. The 3-hour round-trip tour meets cruise guests just outside the port in front of the Exotic Antigua shop, and the half-day trip that adds Long Bay Beach and Devil's Bridge also picks up at the port.

Can you see Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights on a cruise day?

Yes, but it takes a half day: Nelson's Dockyard is about 17 to 18 km from St. John's, a 30 to 40 minute taxi ride each way. The 4-hour historical tour leaves the cruise terminal at 9:00 am, stops at Shirley Heights, spends 45 minutes at the dockyard and is back about 1:00 pm, with the park's entry fee, listed at $15 per person, included. Royal Caribbean says its ship will not wait for guests who go off on their own, so keep slack.

Getting around

How much is a taxi from the Antigua cruise port?

Antigua taxis aren't metered, and although rates are supposedly set by the government, cruisers report that every fare was negotiated, so settle the total, and whether it's per person or per vehicle, before you get in. Drivers wait at kiosks just outside the Heritage Quay gate and on Thames Street, mostly in vans, and a group gets a better price. Uber and Lyft aren't available.

What if my ship docks at Deep Water Harbour in Antigua?

If your ship is at Deep Water Harbour you're about a mile (1.5 km) from downtown at an industrial terminal with no services, so plan on a taxi into St. John's, a ride of 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. The fare is around $10 to $12 per vehicle, much less per person in a shared van. Allow extra time to get back, because town traffic backs up in rain and at evening rush hour.

Is the Royal Beach Club in Antigua open?

No: Royal Caribbean's Royal Beach Club Antigua, announced for the coast across from Fort James, has no published opening date, so it isn't open to visit. Until it opens, Fort James Beach, about 4 km from the piers by road, is the nearest beach to the ships, reached by a short taxi ride.

Money, safety & Wi-Fi

Do I need local currency in Antigua, or are US dollars accepted?

You can get by on US dollars in Antigua: the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, pegged at about EC$2.70 to US$1, but US dollars are widely accepted by tour operators, taxis and shops in tourist areas. Many vendors and taxis take cash only. ATM kiosks between Heritage and Redcliffe Quays and at King's Casino give US dollars and charge a fee, and bank branches with ATMs are about a five-minute walk away.

Do I need a passport for Antigua on a cruise?

On a closed-loop cruise, US citizens can re-enter the country with a birth certificate and a government photo ID, according to US Customs and Border Protection, but CBP warns the countries you visit may still ask for a passport. Bring a passport anyway: if you miss the ship and have to fly home from Antigua, you'll need a passport book.

Is Antigua safe for cruise passengers?

Yes by the official ratings: the US State Department rates Antigua and Barbuda Level 1, 'Exercise normal precautions', and calls it generally a safe destination for travelers. Its advisory notes the islands regularly experience hurricanes. In port, the everyday hazards are traffic, which drives on the left, and unpriced taxi rides, so agree the fare first.

Is there Wi-Fi at the Antigua cruise port?

Yes, there's Wi-Fi around Heritage Quay, but the signal varies, especially on busy multi-ship days. The quay has had passenger Wi-Fi since a tourism ministry and Digicel rollout in December 2018, and many restaurants and bars there offer free Wi-Fi to customers. Mobile coverage is generally good in town, and Digicel and Flow sell local SIMs.
