Venice isn't one dock. Big ships can't reach the old city, so many sail from the industrial port at Marghera, on the mainland. You still don't go there yourself. Check-in happens at Marittima, next to the city's People Mover, and the line takes you to the ship. Which dock your ship uses depends on its size and the sailing, so confirm it on your cruise documents.

Sleeping near Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto puts you a short People Mover ride from Marittima. We found no Venice hotel with a cruise shuttle, so these two are the ones within a walk of the terminal. "Check rates" opens the hotel on Booking.com. The other link opens the hotel's own site.

The terminal operator runs the only car park beside the berth. You book it online, and spaces are guaranteed when you do. The cheaper choice is a garage on Tronchetto island or at Piazzale Roma. From either, the People Mover takes you to Marittima in a few minutes.

Prices are in euros, per 24 hours, as each operator publishes them. The terminal car park shows its price only when you book.

Quick answers

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Terminals & cruise lines

Where do cruise ships dock in Venice, and which terminal does my line use?

Venice's terminal operator, VTP, lists berths at Marittima in the city, Marghera on the mainland, Fusina, San Basilio and Chioggia. Large ships can no longer use the Giudecca Canal route into the city, so they use the mainland berths. Even so, guests check in at Marittima, and a free shuttle or ferry takes them to a ship at Marghera. MSC and Azamara both work this way. Other lines should check their documents. See the terminal.

Where do I check in for an MSC cruise from Venice?

At the Venice Cruise Terminal in the Marittima station, not at Marghera. MSC says all embarkation steps, including baggage drop-off, happen there, and it asks guests not to go to Marghera on their own. MSC runs a ferry from Marittima to the ship. See the terminal.

How do I get to the Fusina, San Basilio or Chioggia cruise terminals?

Check your cruise documents first, because a line often moves guests there from Marittima. VTP lists Fusina with two berths and one terminal, San Basilio with two and one, and Chioggia with one and one. Azamara checks guests in at Marittima and takes them to Fusina in about 30 to 45 minutes. San Basilio has no parking and allows only authorised vehicles. See the terminal.

Why does my Venice cruise say Trieste or Ravenna?

Some lines list Venice-area sailings under another port. Princess says its Venice voyages are often listed as leaving from Trieste (for Venice), and that a Trieste call means a transfer of about 2.5 hours. Check the port name and meeting point on your booking before you plan a transfer. See getting there.

Hotels

What hotels are near the Venice cruise port?

Two hotels are within a 0.75-mile walk of Marittima: B&B HOTEL Venezia Laguna on Tronchetto island, 0.71 miles, and Hotel Olimpia at Piazzale Roma, 0.74 miles. Neither runs a cruise shuttle or sells a park-and-cruise package. B&B HOTEL has a paid garage, subject to availability, and Hotel Olimpia lists paid parking nearby. See the hotels.

Can I walk from my hotel to the Venice cruise terminal?

From the two hotels we checked, yes. B&B HOTEL Venezia Laguna is about a 15-minute walk from Marittima and Hotel Olimpia about 16. From farther into the city, take the People Mover from Piazzale Roma. It runs from 7:00 to 23:00, about every 8 minutes, and takes about 3 minutes. See the hotels.

Parking

How much is parking at the Venice cruise port?

VTP, the terminal operator, publishes no price for its car park beside the berth. It shows the price when you book. The garages nearby publish 24-hour rates: Interparking charges €29.00 at Venezia Tronchetto Parking and €31.00 at Venezia Center Parking, the city's Autorimessa Comunale at Piazzale Roma charges €35.00, and Garage San Marco charges €45. See the parking table.

Where do you park for a cruise from Venice?

The closest option is the VTP Cruise Park inside the port area, a few steps from boarding. It is open-air and holds over 1,200 cars. Booking ahead guarantees a space. The alternative is a covered garage on Tronchetto island, where the People Mover reaches the cruise terminal in about 2 minutes. See the parking table.

Getting there

How far is Venice airport from the cruise port, and how do I get there?

Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is about 13 km from the terminal. VTP says a taxi takes about 20 minutes, a water taxi about 60 and public boats about 80. A bus to Piazzale Roma takes about 20 minutes, then you take the People Mover or a short taxi. MSC guests can ask the line for a transfer. See getting there.

How do I get from Venice Santa Lucia station to the cruise terminal?

Walk about 350 m from Santa Lucia to Piazzale Roma over the Ponte della Costituzione, then take the People Mover to Marittima. VTP says the ride takes about 3 minutes and runs from 7:00 to 23:00, about every 8 minutes. A taxi from Piazzale Roma takes about 2 minutes. Mestre station is about 10 km away, so take a taxi from there. See getting there.

Embarkation day

What time should I arrive at the Venice cruise terminal?

Your line sets the time, so use the check-in window on your boarding documents. Azamara says check-in at Marittima ends at 4:30 PM, and guests are then taken to the ship at Fusina in about 30 to 45 minutes. Allow for that transfer. MSC checks everyone in at Marittima even though its ship sails from Marghera. Find parking near the terminal.

Where do cruises from Venice go?

One itinerary we checked is MSC Lirica's 11-night round trip. MSC lists it calling at Katakolon, Heraklion, Rhodes, Limassol, Port Said, Alexandria and Split before returning to Venice. Other lines sail different routes, so check your own booking. See the ports.
