Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Ålesund, Norway?

Cruise ships in Ålesund dock at the cruise quay on the south side of the town centre, which Fjord Norway says is split into three berths next to each other: Storneskaia, Stornespiren and Prestebrygga. The berth depends on the ship's size and schedule rather than the cruise line, so check your ship's daily program. The port says the town centre is about 200 m away, and there's a terminal with restrooms on the pier.

Is Ålesund a tender port?

No, Ålesund is normally a docking port: ships tie up at the cruise quay in the town centre, and the port says up to three or four ships can call in a day. The port does list an anchorage where tenders are allowed, so on a very busy day your ship's daily program is the place to confirm.

Can you walk into Ålesund from the cruise ship?

Yes. From the Ålesund cruise terminal it's about 0.1 miles, around 4 minutes, to Apotekertorget on the Brosundet canal, and Fjord Norway says the Art Nouveau Centre, Ålesund church and the steps up Aksla are all within 20 minutes of the ship. The streets are hilly and partly cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. The stroll map shows the stops.

What to do in Ålesund, Norway from a cruise ship?

In Ålesund you can see the best of the town on foot: the ship docks about 200 m from the centre, which was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904. Walk to the Brosundet canal and the Art Nouveau Centre in a few minutes, then climb the 418 steps from the town park to the Aksla viewpoint, which costs nothing. Short boat rides, a bus loop and a via ferrata also start near the pier.

How do I get up Mount Aksla from the cruise ship?

Walk to the town park, Byparken, and climb the 418 steps to Fjellstua at the top of Mount Aksla; Fjord Norway says to allow 30–40 minutes one way from the ship. If you'd rather ride, the city train leaves the cruise terminal every 30 minutes on ship days and stops at Fjellstua, and the hop-on hop-off bus goes there too. Fjellstua has a restaurant with views over the islands and mountains.

Beaches & water

Is there a beach near the Ålesund cruise port?

No, there's no sand beach within a short walk of the Ålesund cruise port. The nearest is Tueneset, beside the Atlantic Sea-Park (Atlanterhavsparken) about 1.7 miles west of the terminal. Fjord Norway suggests the FRAM local bus to get out there, and taxis usually wait at the quay when ships are in.

Excursions & getting around

Which fjord trip can I do from Ålesund in a port day?

The Hjørundfjord is the fjord most easily reached from Ålesund in a port day, and both main trips start beside the cruise pier. The vintage boat MS Bruvik does a 5-hour round trip with about an hour ashore at Øye, and a fast RIB (rigid inflatable boat) runs out and back in 105 minutes. Pro Picks has both with prices.

Can I visit Geiranger from Ålesund on a port day?

Only on a long call: the Ålesund–Geiranger round trips sold on GetYourGuide take 9 hours (a winter cruise) to 10.5 hours (boat out, bus back). Check that against your all-aboard time before booking. For a shorter fjord day, the Hjørundfjord trips leave from beside the cruise pier and take 105 minutes to 5 hours.

Is there a hop-on hop-off bus or city train at the Ålesund cruise port?

Yes, both start at the Ålesund cruise terminal on cruise days. The City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus runs a 70-minute loop roughly every half hour, with a stop at the Aksla viewpoint, and Fjord Norway says it runs on the busiest cruise days from April to October. The city train leaves every 30 minutes when ships are in and takes about 70 minutes, including a stop at Fjellstua.

How do I get to the Atlantic Sea-Park from the cruise ship?

Take a FRAM local bus, a taxi or the hop-on hop-off bus: the Atlantic Sea-Park (Atlanterhavsparken) is about 1.7 miles west of the Ålesund cruise terminal. Fjord Norway says to buy bus tickets in advance in the FRAM app for the best price. The aquarium shows sea life from the Norwegian coast, with seals, otters and penguins outdoors.

Are there taxis at the Ålesund cruise port?

Yes, taxis usually wait at the Ålesund cruise quay when ships are in port, according to Fjord Norway, and you can also book one ahead. They're handy for places outside the centre; the airport, for example, is about 15 km from the port.

Money, safety & documents

Do I need Norwegian krone in Ålesund, or are cards accepted?

You don't need cash in Ålesund: Fjord Norway says card payment is accepted everywhere in the town. Norway's currency is the krone (NOK), and Visit Norway says foreign currency is rarely accepted, so pay by card or carry a little krone for small purchases. Tipping isn't common in Norway.

Do US citizens need a visa for Norway?

No. Norway's immigration directorate (UDI) lists the United States among the countries whose citizens don't need a visa to visit Norway, and visa-free visitors can stay up to 90 days, far longer than a day in Ålesund.

Is Ålesund safe for tourists?

The US State Department rates Norway, including Ålesund, Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, its lowest advisory level. Tap water is drinkable throughout Norway. In an emergency, call 112 for police, 113 for an ambulance or 110 for fire.

What time zone is Ålesund in?

Ålesund uses Central European Time (CET), one hour ahead of UTC; Visit Norway says the whole country is on the same time. For getting back to the ship, go by the all-aboard time in your ship's daily program.
