Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Dubrovnik, Croatia?

Most cruise ships in Dubrovnik dock at the Port of Gruž, in the modern part of the city about 2.7 miles from the Old Town. The Dubrovnik Port Authority books two large ships a day at the port and one anchored in front of the Old City, which tenders its passengers in. Gruž has restrooms and ATMs at the port, taxis at the pier and the bus station a short walk away.

Where do Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships dock in Dubrovnik?

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships usually dock at Gruž, as do Norwegian, MSC, Costa, Princess, Carnival, Viking and Oceania on the Dubrovnik Port Authority's late-2026 schedule. One ship a day may instead anchor in front of the Old City and tender passengers into the Old Town harbor; which ship that is isn't published in advance, so check your ship's daily program.

Is Dubrovnik a tender port?

Usually not: most ships dock at the Port of Gruž, but Dubrovnik is a tender port for one ship a day. The Port Authority books two large ships at Gruž and one anchored in front of the Old City, and that ship's tenders take a few minutes to land passengers in the Old Town harbor, right inside the walls area.

Can you walk from the cruise port to Dubrovnik Old Town?

Not easily from Gruž: the Old Town is about 2.7 miles from the cruise berths, so almost everyone takes the city bus or a cruise shuttle, which run straight to Pile Gate in under 15 minutes. If your ship tenders, you land in the Old Town harbor and everything is on foot. The walking map shows six stops from the harbor.

How do I get from the Dubrovnik cruise port to the Old Town?

Take a Libertas city bus or your cruise line's shuttle from Gruž to Pile Gate, the Old Town's main entrance. On the bus, a ticket from the driver costs €2.50, or €5.31 for 24 hours of rides. Shuttles are run by the cruise lines; Norwegian reminds passengers to note the last shuttle back. Taxis also wait at the pier.

What are the best things to do in Dubrovnik in one day?

On a Dubrovnik cruise day, walk the City Walls first: the €40 ticket also covers Lovrijenac Fortress. Then explore the car-free Old Town on foot, from Pile Gate along the Stradun to the harbor. The cable car up Srđ hill is about 10 minutes' walk from the gates, Lokrum Island is a 10-minute ferry ride, and Buža bar on the rocks below the walls is a swim stop. The walking map has the Old Town sights.

Walls, beaches & day trips

Are there beaches near the Dubrovnik cruise port?

Not at Gruž: Dubrovnik's town beaches are by the Old Town, a bus ride from the cruise berths. Banje Beach is just outside the Ploče Gate, about 0.4 miles on foot from the Old Town harbor. You can also swim off the rocks below the walls at Buža bar, or take the 10-minute ferry to Lokrum Island and swim from its rocks.

How much does it cost to walk the walls of Dubrovnik?

A Dubrovnik City Walls ticket costs €40 for adults and €15 for children aged 7 to 18, and children 6 and under go free, according to the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities, which runs the walls. The ticket also gets you into Lovrijenac Fortress, the Western Outer Wall and the Collection of Coins of the Republic of Ragusa.

Can I do a day trip to Montenegro or Mostar from a Dubrovnik cruise stop?

Usually not on a cruise day: tours from Dubrovnik to Kotor and Perast in Montenegro or to Mostar in Bosnia run 9 to 12 hours and cross a border, while most ships stay ten to twelve hours. Lines don't wait for passengers late from their own plans. Closer options, such as the sea caves or the Elafiti Islands, are in the full-day plans.

Time, money, documents & safety

What time do cruise ships leave Dubrovnik?

Most cruise ships at Dubrovnik's Gruž port arrive between 6:00 and 8:00am and leave between 4:00 and 8:00pm, on the Port Authority's late-2026 schedule, so you get ten to twelve hours ashore; check your own ship's all-aboard. Croatia is on Central European Time, and in 2026 clocks go back an hour on 25 October.

What currency does Dubrovnik use?

Dubrovnik uses the euro: Croatia adopted it on 1 January 2023, so the kuna that some older guides mention is gone. The European Commission notes that only the euro is legal tender in the euro area, so bring euros or a card rather than dollars. Celebrity Cruises says about 10% is plenty for good restaurant service.

Do I need a passport for Dubrovnik on a cruise?

Yes. Croatia is in the EU's Schengen area, where the European Union says a non-EU visitor's passport should be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave and issued within the last 10 years. ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation, isn't in operation yet, so there's nothing extra to apply for.

Is Dubrovnik safe for cruise passengers?

Yes. The US State Department rates Croatia Level 1, "Exercise normal precautions", its lowest advisory level, and calls it generally a safe destination for travelers. That advisory was last updated in May 2026.
