Quick answers

Facts last checked .

How we checked these answers

Every answer is built from facts we checked against the sources below and cross-checked with recent port guides. Where sources disagreed, the answer says so instead of guessing a number.

Getting ashore

Where do cruise ships dock in Katakolon, Greece?

Cruise ships dock alongside at Katakolon's cruise piers, on the breakwater right beside the village, so there's no tender. Greece's state asset fund says the port can take up to three ships over 350 metres at once; Celebrity Cruises says its ships use Pier 3. There's a duty-free shop on the pier, but no source lists which pier other lines use, so check your ship's daily program.

Can you walk into Katakolon from a cruise ship?

Yes. Katakolon's village square is about half a mile from the cruise pier, a flat 12-minute walk along the breakwater, and Celebrity Cruises puts the waterfront restaurants about 10 minutes away and calls the town walkable. The stroll map shows the stops.

What to do in Katakolon, Greece from a cruise ship?

Most people come to Katakolon for Ancient Olympia, about 34 km inland; Greece's state asset fund says that's the main reason the port is so busy. A €20 ticket covers the site and its museums, and tours from the pier take 4 to 5.5 hours. If you'd rather stay close, the village is a 12-minute walk, with waterfront tavernas, shops and a museum of ancient Greek technology. See the 5-hour plans.

What to buy in Katakolon, Greece?

Hellenic Train runs a Katakolo–Olympia service Monday to Saturday (about 45 minutes, €10 return); taxis wait at the port, so agree the round-trip price and pickup time first. Shared minibus tours from the pier start at $44.94, and guided tours take 4.5 to 5.5 hours; see the 5-hour plans.

Can you take the train from Katakolon to Olympia?

Yes, Hellenic Train runs a Katakolo–Olympia train Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday service. The trip takes about 45 minutes and a round-trip ticket is €10, sold on board. Katakolo station is at the far end of the village, about half a mile from the cruise pier; check the return time against your all-aboard before you go.

How much is the ticket for Ancient Olympia, and when is it open?

Greece's Ministry of Culture lists one €20 ticket for Ancient Olympia that covers the archaeological site and its museums. It's open 08:00 to 20:00 from 1 April to 31 October, and 08:30 to 15:30 from 1 November to 31 March, so winter visits need an early start.

Beaches & water

Is there a beach near the Katakolon cruise port?

Yes, a small one: Celebrity Cruises says Plakes Beach is one of the only beaches within walking distance of Katakolon's pier. The larger sandy Agios Andreas beach is about 1.9 miles away, roughly 40 minutes on foot along the road. For a long sandy beach, one Olympia tour adds a swim stop at Kourouta.

Money, documents & safety

Do I need euros in Katakolon?

Katakolon uses the euro, like the rest of Greece. If you need cash for a taxi or the Olympia ticket, two ATMs and a bank branch are on the village waterfront, about half a mile from the ship.

Do I need a passport to go ashore in Katakolon?

Greece is in the Schengen area, which the European Union says expects a non-EU visitor's passport to be valid for at least 3 months after leaving and issued within the last 10 years. US Customs lets closed-loop cruisers re-enter the US with a birth certificate and photo ID, but warns ports may still ask for a passport, and you'll need one if you have to fly home.

Is Katakolon safe for cruise passengers?

The US State Department rates Greece, including Katakolon, Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) and calls it generally safe. It warns that petty crime is common at popular tourist spots and that demonstrations can disrupt transport with little notice.

Katakolon is on Eastern European Time (UTC+2), with summer time (UTC+3) under EU rules, one hour ahead of Italy and Spain; in 2026 the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 25 October. Your ship may keep a different time, so check whether all-aboard is given in ship time or local time.
